The two of them stood close together, their equally striking features making a picture–perfect sight. A few shy but curious glances lingered on their faces, but after looking for a moment, people quickly looked away, feeling inferior by comparison.
This time, Tess didn’t refuse Abel’s help. She got into his limited edition Ferrari and headed straight for Evermount Height.
When they finally arrived, seeing the familiar city brought a surge of emotion to her chest.
After so long, she had finally made it back.
Her nose tingled with emotion.
This time, nothing stood in her way.
When she reached the entrance of her apartment, Bessie was already waiting.
Back when her assets had been frozen, the management at Evermount Height had temporarily suspended her residency rights.
Once Finn restored her bank cards, she immediately made arrangements to move back in. But recurring trouble had kept her and Layla away until now.
Now that she knew who was behind all her problems, Tess felt lighter than ever.
Abel watched as Tess walked straight in, carrying Layla. For once, the usually bold and carefree man seemed a little unsure of himself.
He stood still until Tess turned around to invite him.
“Do you want to come in for coffee?”
Abel’s eyes lit up in surprise.
“But if you need to go, I won’t keep you.”
Tess turned away, holding Layla, and started walking toward her apartment again.
A gust of wind whipped past, making Tess’s dress flutter.
It looked just like a pure white flower twirling in the breeze,

Tess’s lips curved up for a moment before she quickly put her calm mask back on.
After all, Abel had played his part well at Evermount Villa. He deserved some credit.
She had resisted facing him all this time, but she couldn’t pretend he didn’t exist.
“Um, Tess, about that …

Just as Tess was about to open the door, Bessie stepped in front of her, looking troubled.
She snuck a nervous glance at Abel, her face looking even more conflicted.
Tess frowned slightly, puzzled by Bessie’s actions. “What’s wrong, Bessie?”
Bessie scratched her head awkwardly. “It’s just that no one’s lived here or cleaned for a while. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to have guests over.”
She gave Tess an exaggerated wink, but her attempt at subtlety was painfully obvious.
Abel sensed something was off. He narrowed his eyes and stared at the house.
Through the crack Tess had opened, he spotted someone moving inside the apartment.
His eyes sharpened, and he put his hand on the door, ready to push it open.
Bessie let out a dramatic “ow,” pretending she’d hurt her back.
Tess hurried to check on her, but Bessie grabbed her hand and whispered, “Someone’s inside. You can’t let him in!”
Abel’s hearing was sharp. He heard everything and became even more determined to open the door.
Bessie rolled her eyes, her mouth turning down in defeat.
Tess didn’t know what was going on, but she played along. “Bessie says there’s someone inside, so maybe it’s not a good time to have you over. Maybe next time.”
“No.”
Abel cut her off. “You don’t know who’s in there. It could be dangerous.”
Tess fell silent.
Abel was about to keep pressing when the door suddenly opened from within.

Connor appeared in a light blue suit, the gold rims of his glasses reflecting Tess’s surprised expression.
She realized she hadn’t seen him in a while.
He rested one hand on the door frame, the other on the door itself.
Then, he pressed both hands to the door. “So, we have visitors.”
Abel met Connor’s eyes directly, glancing at Bessie from the corner of his eye.
Bessie tried to hide behind Tess, clearly uneasy.
“Ms. Ember, I just got back from handling business at Cavrielle’s headquarters. As soon as I returned to Crorus, I heard about everything you’ve been through. I called you twice but couldn’t reach you. I was panicked, so I went to find Bessie, and she brought me here to wait at Evermount Height. I apologize if I seemed a bit too rash with my actions. I should have contacted
you first.”
