To her surprise, the apartment wasn’t dusty or musty–instead, the air was filled with a gentle floral fragrance.
She blinked, then saw a vase of fresh white lilies sitting on the coffee table in the living room.
“I was in a rush, and since you just got out of the hospital, I couldn’t come empty–handed. I picked these up at a flower shop on the way.”
Connor smiled, his eyes warm and gentle behind his glasses–he looked every bit the gentleman.
“It’s the thought that counts. Thank you.”
Tess told Bessie to put the flowers away, then called the moving crew to start bringing their things inside.
Ever since she lost her right to live here and got kicked out months ago, no one else had moved in. The place felt a little cold, but everything in the rooms was exactly as she’d left it.
Once all the new clothes, accessories, and Layla’s toys and formula were put in their proper places, the apartment felt much more like home.
“Ms. Ember, we’re done here.”
The moving crew worked quickly and soon had everything neatly arranged.
“Thank you for your help.”
Tess said a few polite words and sent them on their way.
The movers nodded politely, but before leaving, they couldn’t help glancing back inside a few more times.
It really seemed like something interesting was going on inside the apartment.
After sending off the moving crew, Tess finally turned to look at the two tall men in her living
room.
Connor sat upright on the couch, while Abel lounged comfortably. With one arm resting across the back of the couch and one leg stretched out, he looked completely at ease.

Neither of them spoke. Connor started quietly looking around, while Abel just stared him down shamelessly.
Finally, Connor started to feel a little uncomfortable. He frowned. “And who is this gentleman?”
“He is Finn’s nephew, Abel Shaw.”
Tess handed Layla to Bessie and went to the kitchen to make tea.
Abel frowned at the introduction and quickly corrected her. “I am an old friend of Tess.”
He didn’t want to be associated with Finn in front of Tess and others.
As he spoke, Abel arched a brow at Connor.
Connor remained calm and smiled politely. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Shaw.”
Abel ignored him and stood up abruptly. “I’m going to check out your bedroom.”
He meant it for Tess.
Connor’s usually composed face finally changed a little.
He said with a frown, “Mr. Shaw, it might not be appropriate for you to go into Ms. Ember’s bedroom.”
Abel just gave a laid–back “Oh,” but didn’t slow down.
He had barely taken a few steps from the couch before a hand pressed him right back down.
“Sit.”
Tess set a cup of tea down in front of Abel and handed one to Connor. “The place is a bit bare at the moment. I haven’t had time to restock the tea leaves, so I’m afraid you’ll have to make do
Connor thanked her graciously, while Abel scoffed, thinking Connor was just putting on a
show.
He may have been young, but he wasn’t stupid. From the first moment he saw Connor, he knew they were destined to be rivals.
Still, since Tess had made the tea herself, Abel picked up his cup and drank with enthusiasm.

“Great tea.”
Connor took a sip and instantly offered a compliment.
Abel rolled his eyes when Connor wasn’t looking.
Tess smiled and made small talk with Connor.
Moments later, she suddenly shot a look at Abel, who was making silly faces at Connor. “I invited you in for tea, so once you finish, you can go.”
Abel’s face fell, and cracks started to form in his cheerful expression.
“What about him? Is he leaving, too?”
He glanced at Connor, who was still sipping tea like he didn’t have a care in the world. His relaxed manner only made Abel more irritated.
Tess shook her head. “Mr. Hale came all the way to visit me. I have no reason to send him away.”
“Then why are you kicking me out?”
Abel’s voice rose, and there was a hint of real hurt in his protest.
Tess just shot him a look of exasperation.
Her tone grew firm, leaving no room for argument. “You can leave on your own, or Bessie can show you out.”
