Nadine was too giddy to wonder why Finn would be there at all; she spun on her heel to find him.
Moments later, the divorce papers were in Finn’s hands. A case file Zane had shoved at him in a rush still sat jammed on his shoulder–high shelf.
“Finn, Tess asked me to bring this to you.”
She watched him with bright, nervous eyes.
His face was storm–dark. The fingers hanging at his trouser leg trembled.
So anxious to be rid of him?
She’d barely moved out, and the divorce papers were already on his desk.
“Did she say anything?”
His lips quivered; he pressed them flat, his tone icy.
“She said you’re beneath her.”
Nadine’s eyes flicked, feigning reluctance.
Finn’s grip tightened. The pristine white pages creased under his fist.
“Get out.”
His voice was frosty.
Nadine didn’t understand why he was so frigid, but one look into those black eyes made her flinch. She muttered and slipped out.
Silence enveloped the file room.
Finn slid down the shelving, nearly collapsing, until he sat on the floor.
A lone binder at the bottom edge tipped and fell, hitting his shoe.
He shot it a cold glance–then froze.

He snatched it up and spread it open on the floor.

In a tailored suit yet a wreck on the floor, he tracked every line, inch by inch. The further he read, the wider his eyes grew with rage.
Night had fallen. Heavy clouds crushed the sky, as if the world were balled in a fist.
That night, a luxury car raced into Evermount Height.
Upstairs, Tess was scrolling through the day’s trending stories.
She’d already watched Henry’s smoothly edited clip and found it laughable.
With a flick of her thumb, she messaged Lyra.
“Didn’t expect you to nail it–they really couldn’t help themselves.”
Tess’s mouth curved into a confident smile.
That odd note at the hospital–she’d caught it.
Her fingers tapped the keys. “How’s the dig going?”
Lyra replied fast, “A few threads found. Pushing deeper now.”
“Thanks.”
After putting her phone down, Tess’s gaze drifted in the lamplight.
Since they made the first move, she wasn’t about to play nice.
“Mom…
Layla rubbed against her arm, eyes heavy with sleep.
Warmth softened Tess’s face. She bent, gathering her close.
“Easy, sweetheart. I’ll sing.
“Under the dark, low sky…”
Her clear, lilting voice filled the room, but her thoughts wandered elsewhere.

She blinked back, startled that she even knew this lullaby.
Maybe… because Kylie used to sing it to Nadine all the time.
Tess had sat in the corner, and over time the tune stuck.
Tess’s fingers tightened.
She was the real daughter, yet Kylie prized Nadine over her.
When the truth comes out, will she regret it?
No.
Regret stopped mattering a long time ago.
“Bang, bang-”
A furious pounding hammered the door, snapping the rhythm of bedtime.
Who the hell is that desperate?
Tess opened with Layla in her arms. Liquor fumes and a dark, cutting wind hit her.
Finn stood on the threshold, eyes bloodshot.
She hadn’t expected him–but thinking a beat, she could guess why.
However, understanding didn’t mean tolerance. She started to shut the door.
But strength isn’t equal. He braced a hand.
The pressure intensified; her arm ached. His expression didn’t change.
“What do you want?”
She finally snapped.
“What happened a year ago?”
That question made Tess freeze.
