Finn’s hands clenched at his sides, his eyes locked on Tess with a mix of stubbornness and defiance.

This wasn’t the first time she’d brought it up. He’d torn up more than a few divorce papers already.

Tess, was she really dead set on leaving him?

“Or is it that I haven’t been firm enough?”

Tess’s mouth tipped in a cutting smile.

Finn’s fingers tightened, then eased. “I’ll give you time to think. If you insist on the divorce, I won’t refuse this time.”

His voice was so faint it almost vanished into the air.

Tess pressed her lips together and stared at him in silence.

In the hush, Finn turned and left.

The door clicked softly shut, a last draft of air brushing in.

In her arms, Layla seemed to sense the shift, those black–grape eyes blinking up at Tess.

Tess said nothing, but a vague, hollow disappointment washed over her.

She took Layla back to the bedroom and tried to refocus on the news stories. It was pointless. She finally shut off the light and curled up with Layla to sleep.

Night fell. After the lights went dark, a luxury car still idled outside the building.

Everything was black–except a pinprick of ember by the car window.

Finn’s face was swallowed in smoke–no features, no expression.

He stared at that upstairs window, and yet his heart felt unnervingly calm.

What scared him more was the possibility he didn’t want to face.

Finn let out a rough breath and tamped the cigarette dead.

He didn’t dare think it. He couldn’t help it.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose, started the car, and headed back to the office.

That night, the light in the CEO’s office at the top of Lock Tower burned until dawn.

Elsewhere, there was no gloom–only glee.

Hearing Tess still intended to divorce Finn, the Embers were the happiest people in town.

“Divorce? She brought that on herself. Clinging to Mr. Lock like that–she’s dragged the Ember name through the mud.”

Henry rolled his eyes in exasperation.

“What about me? Mom, Dad, I like Finn too.”

Nadine piped up, coy and sweet.

The hard lines in Henry’s face softened. “Nadine, you’re nothing like that ungrateful girl. Mr. Lock clearly cares more for you, doesn’t he?”

The praise dyed Nadine’s cheeks pink, but her

A man like Finn … only she was worthy.

Unable to hide her smile, she stood. “Mom, Dad, I’ll head to my room.”

Kylie nodded and waved a housemaid over. “Have Joanna bring you some fruit. We’ve got fresh imported mangoes.”

“Mom, I’m allergic to mangoes.”
