Beni grabbed Juniper’s hand suddenly and looked her in the eyes, “if you don’t want this, say the word and we leave right now.”

“Benicio!” his grandmother scolded.

“Abuela, this is a serious overstep. I won’t let anyone hurt my Sunshine. She is too important to me to watch her get hurt, yet again. She’s been through too much over the last month or so. You’re springing someone on her like it’s a good thing but you’re not only messing with one person but two and the other person is her.”

“We’re not telling him anything tonight. We only want to get some information.” Abuela shifted uncomfortably. “It could be purely coincidental.”

Juniper looked up to see Abuelo coming back with two other men. The younger one was pushing the older one in a wheelchair across the pathway between the fences. She couldn’t help herself as she narrowed her gaze on the man who was walking. He was ruggedly handsome, his dark hair sporting flecks of grey at the temples, and a wide smile on his face as he chatted with Beni’s grandfather. He was tall, fit and his eyes were a warm sandy brown.

Juniper had a sudden longing to call her mother. Beni, Phineas and Adil were on their feet to greet the new additions to the dinner table. Abuela also stood. Spanish floated over her head

and all around her and nobody was noting she didn’t speak or say a single word, given she didn’t speak the language. She fell forgotten as she sat there with her hands folded on her lap unable to look away from the enigmatic man holding court now as he chatted loudly.

He was exactly the kind of person she knew her mother would be drawn to. She bet this man turned heads in every direction when he walked into meetings or anywhere actually. While everyone forgot she was there, she fished in her pocket and grabbed her phone and tried to be sneaky to take a photograph of him to send to her mother. She would play dumb and see if her mother recognized him.

Typing a message to her mother she felt nervous, “Beni’s grandmother has handsome neighbors. Even my men forgot I’m here they’re so enamored.”

Juniper waited for her mother to weigh in and then reminded herself there was a six–hour time zone difference, so it was already after one in the morning back home. Her mother was likely sound asleep after working all day for the Perez family.

She felt a pang of sadness thinking her mother was feeling less than working for them now. She hoped her mother was able to resolve her feelings somehow. Looking up from her phone she noted a sudden lull in the conversation and realized everyone was turning to look at her.

wasn’t sure. She felt shaky and he was the one who always made her feel safe. He draped his hand over her shoulder.

“This is our girlfriend Juniper. Juniper this is Inigo,” Phineas waved to the man in the wheelchair, “and his son Fermín. We’ve met before a few times at dinners like this.”

The man in the wheelchair was extending his hand as if wanting to hold hers, so she put her hands in his and felt the tremor in them. “It is nice to meet you.” She gave him a tremulous smile as she considered this could, possibly, be her grandfather. When the older man, with a strength which she didn’t think he would possess yanked her closer and was staring at her very closely, Juniper felt a moment of worry.

The older man said something to Fermín, and he frowned at him and then nodded, as his eyes perused Juniper’s features.

“He said you look very much like my sister. She passed away roughly thirty years ago in a car accident.” The man smiled softly, “it is not a bad thing. She was quite lovely, as you are.”

“Thank you.” She looked down to where her hands were completely ensconced in the mitts of the older man, and he wasn’t letting go. She felt Phineas‘ squeezing her shoulder reassuringly but a sudden urge to yank her hands away and run to the nearest airport was coursing through her.

The housekeeping staff added the extra places to the table for the guests and Juniper watched as the older man continued staring at her, not wanting to let her hand go and then said something forcefully to the housekeepers who looked at Abuela 3/5
