Statistically Impossible Part II
“Already talking about babies?” Abuela asked curiously as she waved to a housekeeper to begin bringing dinner out.
“Yes.” Beni lifted Juniper’s hand. “Juniper unfortunately suffered a miscarriage on the day we told her about her husband’s cheating.”
“Youtold her?” Abuelo asked seriously.
“Phineas brought her up to his office and broke her heart into a million pieces. She miscarried the same day.” Beni said sadly. “We want to make everything up to her, give her everything that asshole took from her. I want to see her be the mother she wants
to be.”
“You’ve been through a lot, Juniper.” Abuela said softly.
Abuelo looked at Beni, Phineas, and Adil, “I hope you took care
of that fucker.” 1
The curse coming from the elderly man’s mouth made Juniper gasp and Beni laugh.
“He’s going to lose everything,” Phineas said bluntly. “He already lost the best damn thing he ever had in his life. He lost his job. He may end up being disbarred. He lost half of the money he stashed away in hidden accounts. He is going to lose so much more. His reputation is in tatters because he slapped a woman and shoved another one.”

“He is not a good man,” Abuelo muttered.
“I didn’t know he was like this. I’ve known him most of my life.” Juniper made a face. “I’ve known him since we were teenagers, and he never acted like a jerk to me. He was doting and protective and I am reeling from all the things we’ve learned.” She looked at Adil, “I’m very grateful for how deep Adil ran his investigation to expose his true colors.”
“But a baby?” Abuela returned to her previous question. “You’re only dating now.”
“We’re getting married,” Phineas said seriously. “The minute her divorce decree is in our hands, we’re marrying her. Then we’re giving her the life she deserves, including all the children she could ever want.”
“Juniper, are they making decisions for you?”
She shook her head, “no. Well, they are making decisions for me, but they also are hearing me when I’m telling them what I want and what I need. The night of my miscarriage, the three of them took care of me. Phineas made sure my mom was there. Adil went to the pharmacy and bought me feminine supplies. Beni was making my tea. Beni arranged for me to see someone to talk to. Phineas booked me into the spa. Adil bought me a kitten.”
“A kitten?” Abuela looked at Adil with a smile. “Really? Who is watching your kitten while you’re here?”
“My friend Suki. She’s taking care of him. She sent me a video

The sound of coughing on the other side of the fence separating the yards. Juniper watched as Abuelo got up from his seat, moved to the gate, and pulled it open. He spoke concernedly to the man on the other side and then gave a wave to someone else in the distance.
“My neighbor is older than us. Like us, they moved to Canada many years ago, but they came back when my neighbor’s mother died of a heart attack. They were rushing and they were all in a car accident on the way to the hospital to say goodbye to her. My neighbor and his son were both seriously hurt in the accident. He is in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down,” Abuela motioned to the gate, “and his wife takes care of him. His son was in a coma for seven months. When he came out of his coma, he didn’t have any memory at all. It took him nearly two more years to get better.”
“That’s sad.”
“It was but it was nearly thirty years ago. We’d just bought this place when they bought theirs. We became good friends over the years. Their son recovered well and he is quite wealthy. He’s spent the last several years back and forth from Canada running the business his father started there.” She looked at her husband who was tottering back on his cane. “Everything okay?”
“Just a coughing spell. Fermín is there. Anna is at a show with her sister.” 1

Juniper’s ears perked up. “Is Fermín a common name here in 3/6

“Yes. Why do you ask?”

“My mom recently told me my father’s name is Fermín. I’m just fascinated another person has the same name.”
“What’s your mother’s name?” Abuelo asked with a frown.
“Maeve.”
Juniper watched as the two people looked at each other in confusion.
“What?” Beni asked curiously. “You can’t possibly think the guy next door is Juniper’s father. He was in Toronto and lived there. He owned a vehicle there and everything.”
“Except,” Abuelo was pushing back in his chair, “when Fermín woke up from his coma he kept calling a woman’s name. He couldn’t remember anything. Not his parents or his sister or even his own name but he kept saying the same name over and over again.”
Juniper stared incredulously. “Don’t say it,” she whispered as Abuela ignored her.
“He called the name Maeve all the time. He’d wake from a dead sleep saying it.”
