Gideon finished his cigarette and stubbed it out before unlocking his phone to reply to work messages. Just as he opened one, he received a call from Skylar.

“You’re going to the banquet too?”

Gideon replied in a rough voice, “Yeah.”

“What’s wrong? Are you smoking right now?” Skylar asked, puzzled. “Not in a good mood?”

As if remembering something, Skylar added, “Let me guess. You confessed, and Nancy rejected you?”

There was a hint of schadenfreude in his tone.
