Chapter 68 The Moore Group’s Heiress

The audience took a moment to recover, then applause rippled through the hall.

“That was amazing. I think she played better than Raine!”

“I agree. That piece felt like it contained magic that swept away all my ill feelings.”

“I was completely lost in the music just now.”

As praises endlessly flowed, the Lidells were far from pleased. Fergus, in particular, snorted. What’s wrong with these people’s ears? Raine was clearly better! Her teacher is Nanette, for crying out loud!”

Regina felt unsettled. That last performance had left a stronger impact than Raine’s. But it didn’t make sense to her. Raine had Nanette as her teacher. There was no way Raine could lose.

When the last contestant finished, the judges began tallying scores.

Ten minutes later, the results were in.

The contestants sat in their seats, nerves stretched taut.

The host soon stepped on stage. “The champion of this year’s National Piano Competition has been decided. Our champion will receive a Steinway Noe piano, sponsored by Fuller Group!”

A collective gasp swept through the audience. That piano was worth 300 thousand dollars.

“Fuller Group is ridiculously generous!”

“I wonder if Mr. Fuller is here today. I heard he’s insanely handsome.”

Even Nancy was a little surprised. Such an extravagant prize was a first.

The host began reading the list of winners. “In tenth place, Emily Lowell. Ninth place…”

The tension built until they eventually reached the top three.

“Coming in third, Yasmine Walker.”

A beaming Yasmine stood up.

The host continued, “In second place, Raine Lidell!”

Raine froze. For several seconds, disbelief flooded her eyes.

If she was second place, who was first?

She reluctantly stood as the host announced, “And our first–place winner is… Mary York!”

Raine’s steps faltered.

She stared at the host in shock. When Mary walked past her and took the stage, Raine forced herself to step forward. Her thoughts were in complete disarray.

“Mary took first place? I didn’t think Raine could lose.”

“And her teacher is Nanette. How could she not win?”

“But I do think Mary’s playing was just better.”

The whispers rippled through the audience.

Mary stood proudly on the stage. Her eyes shone with tears. It was clear that she was overwhelmed with joy.

Meanwhile, Raine’s face was darkening by the second. She instinctively glanced toward the judges‘ table. In the dim light, she could make out a few silhouettes. Nanette was seated on the right, wearing a hat and a mask.

“Now, let’s move on to the awards ceremony!”! the host announced.
