If it weren’t for the guests in the room, Amelia would have told him outright to go get his eyes checked at a hospital.
She knew Daniel was doing it on purpose, but she wasn’t fazed. It was just a presentation—she’d given more of those in college than she could count.
Amelia walked up to the screen, started the slideshow from the beginning, and explained each point with clear, confident diction. Her poise was undeniable.
Daniel tapped his fingers on the table, eyes fixed on her throughout. The faint smile on his lips made him look every bit like a proud father watching his daughter excel—he radiated pride down to the last hair on his head.
When Amelia finished, the principal gave her a big thumbs up.
She took her seat again. Daniel leaned over and said quietly, “What am I supposed to do? You’re so impressive, I’m suddenly feeling unworthy of you.”
Amelia nearly spit out the water she was drinking. She glanced around in a panic—good grief, why would he say something so easily misunderstood in public?
Daniel raised a brow. “You look like you can’t wait to distance yourself from me.”
Trying to appear calm, Amelia set down her glass, though she was flustered to her core. She lowered her voice. “Mr. Campbell, please behave yourself.”
Daniel let out a soft, haughty scoff. “Not a chance.”
Amelia: …
Fortunately, Daniel kept his teasing to just the two of them. He didn’t go around flaunting their relationship—thank goodness, since they were on the verge of divorce. If people found out, it would only be awkward for everyone involved.
At noon, the group had lunch in the campus cafeteria.
The food there was always good, and the principal hadn’t arranged for any special private meal.
Daniel trailed after Amelia with his tray, watching as she helped herself to some scrambled eggs with tomatoes.
“I thought you didn’t like tomatoes. Always said they were too sour.”
When the group reached the gate, the principal came to see them off. Daniel slid one hand into the pocket of his suit pants and suddenly asked, “I wonder how the new library is coming along?”
The library had only been under construction for just over a month, so there wasn’t much to see, but the principal still replied, “If you have time, Mr. Campbell, would you like to take a look?”
“You’ve spent the whole day with us, Principal. You should go get some rest.” Daniel nodded toward Amelia. “I’ll just have Amelia show me around.”
He even had the nerve to pretend to ask for her opinion. “Amelia, is that all right with you?”
Before Amelia could answer, the principal opened the car door and answered for her. “Of course it is!”
Without a word, Amelia found herself being tugged along by Daniel and nudged into the car by the principal.
Amelia: …
