Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 107

The car door slammed shut; in the next instant, the engine roared to life, and they sped off.

Daniel drove so fast, it was as if he was afraid she’d make a run for it.

Amelia couldn’t help but sneer inwardly at his behavior. All that talk about going to the library—what a flimsy excuse. She knew perfectly well this was about the divorce.

Yet Daniel didn’t breathe a word about it. Instead, after spinning his phone idly in his hand, he turned to her. “Let me borrow your phone for a second.”

Amelia frowned, puzzled. “My phone isn’t any different from yours.”

“Mine’s dead,” he said, holding out his hand. “Just need to make a quick call. I’ll give it right back.”

Maybe it was all the runaround Daniel had given her today, but she handed her phone over without thinking. He took it and immediately started tapping at the screen.

She turned to look out the window. A beat later, she realized something. “It’s locked. Give it here, I’ll unlock it.”

Daniel passed the phone back. The moment she glanced at the screen, her temper flared. “You’ve locked it out! Too many wrong attempts!”

She shot him a glare. “What’s wrong with you? If you don’t know the passcode, why would you just punch in random numbers?”

Daniel’s face was all innocence. “I thought I might guess it.”

He even had the nerve to start listing off possibilities: “It’s not my birthday, not yours, not the day we met, not our anniversary…”

He let out a derisive snort. “You really are heartless. You’ve wiped everything clean—no sentiment left at all.”

Amelia shoved the now-useless phone back into her pocket. “Maybe you should try the date for our divorce.”

“We’re not divorced yet. There’s no such date.”

“Tomorrow’s the hearing. The court will grant it.”

Daniel clenched his jaw, clearly frustrated. He reached over and turned her face toward him. “You think you’re so lucky the judge will grant it at once? Let me tell you, if I don’t agree, this marriage isn’t ending.”

“‘This time’?” Daniel echoed, the corner of his mouth twitching in mock offense. “You make me sound shameless. Don’t worry. I’m not so desperate—I know it’s pointless to hold onto someone whose heart’s already gone.”

He tossed her hand away and turned his face from her, offering only the back of his head. “You’re the one who wanted to keep things civil. Tomorrow it’s over. Can’t we at least have one last meal together?”

He gave off an air of lofty indifference, as if to say, “You think I care? I don’t need you,” and Amelia pressed her lips together. “Fine. One last dinner.”

Might as well end things on a note that’s at least polite.

The housekeeper had spent the whole afternoon preparing all of Amelia’s favorites.

“Mr. and Mrs. Miller, enjoy your meal. I’ve got somewhere to be tonight, so I’ll see myself out.”

Apron off, she slipped out the door in a flash, as though eager not to intrude on their final evening together.
