Sophia stepped out of the luxury car, the prestigious keys clutched in her hand. Just before closing the door, a flicker of conscience—untouched by all the wealth—made her glance back. “Sweetheart, I’m just in the car up ahead. Call me if you need anything, okay?”
Daniel called out, “If you’re not back in ten seconds, I’m driving off.”
Sophia shot away like a startled rabbit.
Buying a moment alone with Amelia had cost Daniel a pretty penny, but now that he had it, he said nothing. He simply fixed her with those impossibly deep eyes of his and didn’t blink.
Amelia stared right back, figuring it was the least she could do, considering he was footing the bill.
After a long silence, he finally spoke. “Who was that guy?”
She looked at him, puzzled. “…What guy?”
Daniel’s lips curled into a cold, ambiguous smile. “Didn't you say we shouldn’t keep secrets? If there’s something, just be upfront. Honestly, I’m curious—just how breathtaking is this guy that you’re so set on divorcing me for him? Why not introduce us? We’re still married, I should at least get a look. Maybe help you judge his character.”
What nonsense. Amelia felt like she was listening to static. “If you’re not going to speak plainly, I’m leaving.”
Daniel pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek and smirked. Protective, huh?
He pulled out his phone and thrust it in front of her face, a paused video on the screen. “Just look at his hands. That doesn’t look like someone trustworthy.”
She stared at the phone, finally understanding the source of his inexplicable jealousy.
He’d gotten the wrong idea, but she had no intention of clearing it up.
“What’s it to you?” Amelia turned to stare out the window. “Go to Blue Haven Island and be with your old flame.”
“I didn’t—”
“Spare me the details!” Her voice cracked, rising sharply. “If you want to talk about her, get out and do it. I don’t need to hear it!”
Fury flared in Daniel’s eyes, hot and sudden. He glanced at her flushed lips and, with a rough touch, traced her mouth. “Did your new lover kiss you here? Is he better at it than I am?”
Amelia dropped her gaze, terrified that another second of eye contact would give her away. “Not everyone’s ruled by their hormones, you know.”
Her downcast eyes made her look almost bashful, but she hadn’t denied it outright. Daniel’s expression darkened in an instant; his anger burned away every shred of reason. He grabbed her by the nape of her neck and pulled her close.
“Ruled by my hormones, am I?” His laugh was cold and dangerous. “Well, I’m feeling it now, Mrs. Miller. Think you can handle that?”
Amelia’s eyes went wide, but before she could make a sound, his lips crashed down on hers.
In the cramped car, his powerful frame pinned her against the back seat. There was no escape, nowhere to run.
Just three days ago, he’d been on Blue Haven Island with Violet—kissing her on that idyllic pink beach, whispering sweet nothings over the sound of the waves…
