Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 136

Daniel was momentarily at a loss for words.

Not many people could twist things to their advantage quite like this.

He stood up. “I’m starving. Let’s grab something to eat and talk over dinner.”

As he reached the doorway to the dressing room, he paused, looking back with a warning. “Don’t even think about running off. Charles is still nearby. I can have him bring you right back in a heartbeat.”

Amelia stared at him in silence. Was this really the first time someone had used their own childhood friend as a threat?

Not that she was worried Daniel would actually do anything to Charles—it was that last comment, the one that sounded almost like a sigh of relief, that caught her attention. She sensed an opening. If she could get him to simply sign the divorce papers, it would be so much cleaner and faster than dragging things through court.

Daniel drove her to a well-known local restaurant, one of those old establishments that always had a waitlist for the window seats. Somehow, he’d managed to snag a prime table.

After ordering, Daniel remembered what she’d picked up last time in the cafeteria and decided to add a side of scrambled eggs with tomatoes at the last minute.

He’d picked out all her old favorites, but Amelia avoided the greasy dishes, instead choosing mostly the tangy salads and light appetizers.

Daniel watched her for a moment, then suddenly commented, “Since when did your tastes change? You used to love your meat.”

Amelia paused, fork hovering. “It’s spring. Time to shed some winter weight.”

“So your new diet is all greens, no meat?” Daniel leaned back in his chair with a lazy grin. “Send me a copy of your meal plan.”

“You’re trying to lose weight too?”

“No, I want to give your plan to my mom so she knows exactly what not to cook for me.” He smirked. “Your ‘diet’ is the best example of what not to do. You’ll just end up gaining weight—your waistline’s definitely bigger than before.”

Amelia rolled her eyes, tempted to throw something at him. But then a memory flickered; her eyelashes trembled.

On New Year’s Eve, he’d held her close, arms wrapped around her waist for a long, long time.

“Daniel!”

A housekeeper appeared, pushing Violet in her wheelchair.

What a crowd—this was turning into a real circus.

Amelia was used to it by now; wherever Mogan went, Violet was sure to follow. She lowered her head and picked at her food, suddenly finding it tasteless and losing her appetite.

Violet glanced at Daniel. “Honestly, I wasn’t planning on coming tonight if you weren’t, but Mogan said Mr. Brown insisted, so I figured I’d better show up. Didn’t expect to run into you here.”

When her eyes landed on Amelia, jealousy pricked at her, though she kept her expression soft and pleasant, smiling sweetly. “Oh, Amelia, you’re here too? Perfect! You should come upstairs with us—you haven’t met Mr. Brown yet, have you?”

Last time, they’d almost met, but Daniel must have figured since the two of them were getting divorced, there was no need to introduce her to his friends.
