Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 14

The consequence of turning off her phone was that the alarm never rang. When Amelia finally woke, it was already past nine. Remembering she had to sync the data at nine-thirty, she rushed through her morning routine at record speed and bolted out of the dorm.

Only to be stopped at the front steps.

Daniel was waiting for her.

Amelia didn’t want to deal with him. She tried to walk past, but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.

“So you turned your phone off all night—still mad at me?”

How did he even know her phone was off? Did he actually try to call her last night?

The thought flashed through her mind but was quickly drowned out by the anger simmering in her chest.

She shot him a scornful look. “What, your night with your porcelain doll wasn’t wild enough, so you tried calling me for a live broadcast? Daniel, try being a decent human for once.”

Daniel’s brow furrowed. “What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t spend the night with her. If you want to talk about late nights, I’ve had plenty with you. When are you moving back in?”

Move back? What was the point? The other side of the bed would still be empty. Sleeping alone in a double bed was worse than curling up by herself in a single—at least the sheets warmed up faster that way.

Maybe once, Amelia would have thrown those words back at him, but not now. She just didn’t have the energy.

Mostly, she was really pressed for time.

She twisted her wrist, managing to shake him off. “I’m going to be late. Let go of me.”

Daniel called after her as she strode away. “Did you mean what you said last night, or were you just angry?”

The wound in her chest hadn’t healed overnight. That hollowed-out ache kept bleeding, no matter how much she tried to ignore it.

After the way Daniel had gutted her heart, why should she make things any easier for him?

“What do you think, Daniel the Knockoff?”

His expression turned frosty, a chill settling into his eyes that was colder than midwinter.

No matter how fast Amelia hurried, she was still late—and Baron caught her red-handed.

Baron was strict, notorious for his zero tolerance for tardiness and anything less than professionalism. She got a full, scathing lecture.

Emily came back from the cafeteria, swinging a bag that smelled strongly of spicy barbecue, and spotted Amelia sitting motionless. “Amelia, the food’s amazing today. Why aren’t you getting lunch?”

“I’m not hungry.”

“No wonder you’re so slim.” Emily gnawed contentedly on her barbecue, then remembered something. “Oh, that paper you helped my sister with—the one you edited for her? She passed! Thanks a ton.”

“No problem. Happy to help.”

“Easy for you to say,” Emily joked, “If it were me, I’d be tearing my hair out and still not sure if I’d pass. Want a bite? The barbecue’s really good today.”

Amelia didn’t mind barbecue, but right now, the greasy smell made her a little queasy.

“I’ll pass. You enjoy it. I’ll go grab something at the cafeteria.”

Sure enough, the menu was especially varied today, just as Emily said, but Amelia’s appetite was nowhere to be found. She settled for some scrambled eggs with tomato and a side of cucumber salad.

Halfway through, she froze, a sudden thought striking her. She fumbled for her phone and checked the date.

If she remembered right, her period was late.
