Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 15

Amelia was starting to panic.

She and Daniel had always been careful—contraceptives and all that. But for all his cool, untouchable façade, Daniel was a maniac in bed. There was that one time he got so wild, he actually tore the condom.

Amelia only realized afterward. There’d been just the tiniest bit outside, and since it was supposed to be her safe window, she’d crossed her fingers and skipped the morning-after pill. Surely her luck couldn’t be that bad… right?

She barely got through dinner, then drove over to the pharmacy and bought two boxes of pregnancy tests.

The pharmacist told her the results were most accurate with first-morning urine, so she slipped the boxes into her bag and decided to wait till tomorrow.

Later, after finishing her work for the day, Grandma Edith called. She sounded unusually lucid and said she missed Amelia, asking her to come home for dinner.

The Campbell family’s attitude toward Amelia was polite but distant. The only exception was Grandma Edith. Whether she was clear-headed or confused, she always treated Amelia like her own granddaughter.

Maybe because Amelia had grown up with so little warmth, she treasured this grandmotherly affection all the more.

She drove over, expecting only Grandma Edith to be there, but to her surprise, Daniel’s mother—Grace Stewart Campbell—was at the table too.

Grandma Edith fussed over her, lamenting that Amelia looked thinner, and kept piling food onto her plate. Halfway through, her hands suddenly froze mid-air. Amelia recognized the signs of another episode and calmly tucked a napkin around Grandma’s collar, then picked up a spoon and fed her.

Grace watched the scene, then broke the silence. “You and Daniel have been married for, what, two years now?”

Amelia knew where this was going—it was almost a ritual by now. “Not yet. We’re not planning on having kids for the time being.”

Grace frowned. “You should make time to get checked out at the hospital.”

In the past, Amelia might have swallowed the comment and brushed it off. But after days of stifling frustration, she couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“Mom, how are you so sure the problem’s with me and not Daniel? He’s always busy, stays up late, drinks, sometimes even smokes—his lifestyle is a mess. I’m in much better shape than he is.”

As if Grace would ever admit her precious son had any faults. “I gave birth to Daniel. I’d know if there was something wrong. He was always strong and healthy—never had any problems!”

“Shouldn’t the wife be the authority on whether a man’s up to the job or not?” Amelia smiled, though her eyes were cold. “After all, I’m the one sharing his bed, not his mother.”

Grace’s expression darkened. “Is that any way to talk to your mother-in-law? I say one thing, you bite back with ten.”

Daniel never smiled much, and right now his face was unreadable. He strode over, grabbed Amelia by the arm, and said, “Let’s go.”

“Oh, you’re here. Aren’t you going to have a bite?” Grace called after them.

“No time. We’ve got a hospital appointment.”

He ushered Amelia into the car, then rolled up the privacy screen. She suddenly felt like she was being kidnapped.

Daniel’s dark eyes locked onto hers, unblinking. After a long silence, he spoke, enunciating each word: “Mr. Noodle Cup?”

Amelia shrank back. “That was Grandma’s idea.”

“If your mouth weren’t so sharp, she’d never have come up with such an earth-shattering nickname.”

Before she could protest, he cupped her chin in his hand and pressed his lips to hers.

She was caught off guard, instinctively trying to push him away, but he pinned her wrists to his chest.
