The weekend passed quietly.
On Monday, Amelia was up before dawn, then proceeded to drag a grumbling Sophia out of her cozy bed.
Eyes squeezed shut, Sophia groaned dramatically toward the ceiling. “I thought taking Monday off meant I could finally sleep in. Who knew I’d be up even earlier than a workday? God above, have mercy…”
Amelia only replied, “Hermès.”
Instantly, Sophia shot upright as if electrified. Still half-asleep, she clasped her hands together in mock reverence. “Yes, my dearest Lady Moneybags, what would you like for breakfast? I’ll fetch it from the cafeteria right away.”
By the time they finished breakfast, it was only eight. With two hours to spare before the hearing, Amelia and Sophia waited at the front gate. Mr. Harper arrived to pick them up.
The drive to the courthouse went smoothly.
The moment Amelia spotted the imposing emblem above the entrance, the anxiety that had trailed her all morning finally eased.
She’d rather get there early and wait than risk anything going wrong on the way.
They waited in the hushed, solemn courthouse for over an hour until the clock struck ten, and the hearing began right on time.
As expected, Daniel didn’t show.
But that didn’t matter. Even if the court refused to grant the divorce for lack of evidence, she wouldn’t withdraw her petition. Three years of separation was evidence enough. When the time came, Mr. Harper would refile, and the court would have no choice but to grant it.
Stepping out into the crisp air, Amelia inhaled deeply, savoring the taste of freedom.
“Let’s go, let’s go! A day like this deserves a celebration!” Sophia beamed, genuinely happy for her friend. Their victory in this long divorce battle was nothing short of spectacular.
Amelia thanked Mr. Harper for his help and Sophia for sticking by her through thick and thin—even spending two days locked up on base for her sake—then invited them both out for a lavish seafood lunch.
Meanwhile, Finley was glued to his phone, fingers flying across the screen as he joked around in the group chat, arranging lunch with the guys.
But Finley’s ace worked. Saint Daniel finally responded: “Send me the address.”
When Daniel arrived at the private dining room, the guys were gathered around a game of cards. He walked straight over and held out his hand to Finley.
With a look of resignation, Finley passed Daniel his hand of cards to play for him, then unlocked his girlfriend’s phone and dialed Amelia’s number.
Daniel held the cards, but his eyes never left the phone. Whenever Finley’s girlfriend played her lines—just as they’d rehearsed—Amelia didn’t hang up right away, swayed by the sweet, unfamiliar female voice. She actually humored the conversation for a couple of sentences.
But by the fifth line, Amelia caught on and hung up immediately.
Just like that, Finley’s girlfriend was inducted into the ranks of Amelia’s blacklist, joining the rest of the guys.
Seeing that his plan had failed, Daniel tossed the cards back to Finley and stood up, clearly ready to leave.
