The two men were hurling insults at each other, fists already flying, while a woman stood off to the side, stamping her foot and shouting, “Will you two just stop fighting!”
Ah. So it was a good old-fashioned cheating scandal.
Amelia lingered, unwilling to leave and miss the spectacle. She even canceled her ride just to stick around and watch the drama unfold. Only when the hospital security guards rushed over to separate the men, and the show was clearly over, did she finally order another car and head out.
As the crowd of gawkers dispersed, a plain-looking woman with a short haircut watched Amelia get into her rideshare. Then, without a word, she turned and climbed into a black sedan parked nearby.
The woman with the cropped hair bought a bag of fruit and made her way up to the hospital ward. When Violet saw her come in, she turned to the housekeeper at her bedside and said, “I want to talk to my friend alone. Would you mind taking a walk downstairs for a bit?”
Once the housekeeper left, the short-haired woman quietly locked the door behind her, then pulled a camera from her bag and handed it to Violet.
“OB-GYN department?” Violet asked, her brow furrowing. Then, as if a cold wave washed over her, she suddenly stiffened and looked up. “Besides the OB-GYN, has she seen any other men?”
“She mostly stays at the center,” the woman replied. “Hardly ever goes out. The only time she left was yesterday—she visited her father in Silver Oak Town. Other than that, nothing unusual.”
Violet’s original plan had been to find out if Amelia was cheating on Daniel. After all, Daniel was the one refusing to sign the divorce papers, while Amelia seemed desperate to end the marriage. It sure looked like she was eager to run straight into someone else’s arms.
Daniel had told her that the Campbell family took tradition—and marriage—very seriously. Without a major reason, divorce simply wasn’t done. Besides, the Campbell elders adored Amelia. So, for now, the marriage was off-limits.
Violet understood Daniel’s predicament, but she couldn’t accept it. So she decided to dig for dirt on Amelia.
No matter how much the Campbell family liked her, they’d never tolerate a cheating daughter-in-law. Violet had spared no expense hiring someone to investigate.
Sophia let out a dramatic sigh. “The way you’re treating me, it feels like Daniel might send a hitman after me if I step outside. Don’t freak me out.”
Assassination was a stretch, but Daniel, for all his laid-back charm, had a possessive streak that Amelia had witnessed firsthand. She wasn’t about to take any chances.
“As compensation for making you serve time in ‘prison,’ I’ll buy you all the streaming memberships you want. And—” Amelia pointed to a bag on the sofa, “that’s for you.”
A Hermès Kelly bag.
Sophia practically slid to her knees, clutching the exquisite crocodile-skin purse, her eyes shining with grateful tears. “If you really want to ease my conscience, maybe toss in some designer handcuffs, too. Otherwise, I don’t think I deserve this bag.”
Amelia could only stare at her, speechless.
