Daniel caught up to her in a few quick strides and reached for her hand, but Amelia swung around and slapped him hard across the face.
With a loud bang, Daniel kicked the door shut behind them. He pressed his tongue against the spot on his cheek where her palm had landed and turned to face her.
“Slap me and just walk away? Is that how it is?”
The book in Amelia’s arms slipped and thudded to the floor. She crouched to pick it up, but as she lowered her head, tears welled up and spilled over before she could stop them.
Anywhere else, she could endure it—anywhere but here.
This was supposed to be their newlywed home. Out of all the places he owned, why did he have to choose this one?
It wasn’t that Amelia was soft-hearted; she just couldn’t take it anymore. He was being cruel, pushing her too far.
The sting on Daniel’s cheek from her slap vanished the instant he saw those glistening tears on her lashes.
He crouched down beside her and gently reached out to wipe a tear from the corner of her eye.
“Don’t touch me!” Amelia jerked her head away.
Whatever anger Daniel had left was defeated by those few shimmering tears. His voice softened to a murmur. “It’s my fault, alright? My face must be too tough—did you hurt your hand?”
Amelia scrubbed at her tears with the back of her hand, grabbed her book in a haphazard bundle, and made for the door.
“Amelia!”
Daniel was unsettled by her silence, even more so by the way each word seemed to make her cry harder. He tried to take the book from her arms, but when she found them empty, she shoved him in frustration. “Will you just stop tormenting me?”
He stumbled back half a step, clutching her precious book, a look of helplessness on his face. “Honestly, who’s tormenting whom right now?”
Amelia felt her composure slipping. The thought of Violet suddenly walking out and seeing her like this—so undone—nearly made her break down. She could lose, but not like this, not in front of Violet. She couldn’t stand that kind of humiliation.
Deciding she’d rather leave the book behind, Amelia kept her head down and hurried toward the door.
“Amelia, just talk to me!” Daniel set the book aside, caught up in two strides, and grabbed her hand. She shook him off, but he simply turned her around and pulled her into his arms.
Daniel followed her gaze, still baffled. “Is there something in the bedroom?”
Amelia’s mind was foggy from crying, but she nodded anyway.
Of course there was something “dirty” in there.
Daniel was at a loss, but with Amelia crying like this, he couldn’t just stand by. He scooped her up and strode toward the master bedroom.
Suddenly, Amelia snapped out of her daze and began to struggle in his arms.
She must be out of her mind! Why on earth would she want to walk into the room where she and Daniel used to share a bed—especially now, with Violet possibly inside?
But it was too late. Daniel reached the door, which was still ajar, and kicked it open with one forceful motion.
The scene inside the room spread out before them.
