Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 148

Amelia froze.

The room fell eerily quiet.

Daniel glanced down at her in his arms, clicking his tongue. “Seriously? You think there’s something supernatural here? You keep changing your tune every five seconds.”

Inside, Amelia’s mind was a riot of colors and confusion, but not a hint of it showed on her face. She remained perfectly calm.

Daniel, as if suddenly convinced there really was something paranormal at play, put on a solemn expression and addressed the empty air. “Whoever you are, get off my wife right now. She scares easily—don’t mess with her.”

Amelia took a few steadying breaths and, with a voice as cool as ice, said, “Put me down.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. “What, the ghost’s gone already? I haven’t even started my exorcism yet.”

She kept her face stiff as she stepped down to the floor. Whether it was nerves or something else, she wandered from the bed to the vanity, then over to the walk-in closet.

The closet was spacious; their clothes hung in neat rows behind glass doors, no sign of anyone else ever having been there.

Amelia did a slow lap, then retraced her steps back.

Daniel watched her making her inspection, all businesslike, and suddenly had an idea. “Amelia, you don’t actually think I’m hiding a woman in the closet, do you?”

Amelia’s step faltered for just a second. Now that her panic had subsided, she felt deeply embarrassed by her earlier outburst—if only she could go back half an hour and give herself a good shake.

Utterly mortifying.

At least, she consoled herself, no one else knew, so the embarrassment was hers alone.

“You can hide whoever you want. I just came back to grab something.” She made a show of opening the jewelry case and grabbed a random watch.

Daniel looked at her red-rimmed eyes for a moment, then walked over, gently turned her by the shoulders, and opened the closet doors right in front of her.

“See? No one in here.”

Daniel let out a laugh, both exasperated and amused. He reached out and gently turned her to face him. “If your taste changes this fast, does your heart ever change, too?”

Amelia looked at him blankly. “...What?”

He grinned. “Change back to liking me again.”

“...You’re insane.”

She tried to ignore him, but his words were just asking for a comeback.

Daniel wasn’t the least bit offended. If anything, he was pleased with himself. “Look at us—one of us haunted, the other a lunatic. We’re the perfect match.”

Amelia headed for the study. Since things had already gotten awkward, she figured she might as well finish clearing out all her books now and save herself a second trip.

She gathered up the ones she needed, picked up the few from the living room, and headed for the door.
