Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 150

It was clear that now wasn’t the right time for them to leave—the door opened from the inside.

Mr. David, the bespectacled man in charge of records, straightened his collar as he saw the two of them. He cleared his throat and asked irritably, “What are you two doing here?”

The question was almost laughable—who would drop by the records office for fun? But since he was a faculty member, Amelia still replied politely, “Mr. David, I’m leaving for my internship soon and won’t be coming back to campus. I wanted to fill out my graduation paperwork ahead of time.”

He stepped aside, gesturing for them to enter.

At the records desk sat a woman with a head of perfectly styled waves. When she saw Amelia walk in, she let out a derisive snort.

Amelia had always gotten along with people, but college was like a little slice of society—there’s always a few oddballs lurking around. Tina was one of them.

Amelia had never done anything to her, but after a guy Tina liked had publicly confessed to Amelia, Tina had pegged her as some sort of romantic rival. The irony? Amelia hadn’t even dated the guy, so it was hard to see what kind of rivalry this was supposed to be.

Later, Amelia heard from classmates that Tina only fancied the guy for his family background. Every one of her relationships was calculated, never for pure affection. Now she’d set her sights on Mr. David in the records office. Who knew what she wanted this time? If both were single, maybe no one would gossip, but Mr. David was married—his wife was even pregnant with their second child.

Amelia caught Emily rolling her eyes dramatically.

Amelia turned away, determined not to get dragged into petty drama. She just wanted to finish her paperwork and leave. “Mr. David, where’s my file?”

Tina, examining her fresh manicure, let out a mocking laugh. “Look at you, just ‘I’ this and ‘I’ that. Who even knows who you are? If you don’t say your full name, how’s anyone supposed to help?”

Everyone at Silkwood Institute of Technology knew Amelia. Her photo from her freshman year, when she gave the welcome speech, was still on the school’s website—they even used it for admissions brochures.

Maybe they’d get lucky and find it quickly.

But before they could even start searching, Tina shrieked, “What do you think you’re doing? If you mess up or lose a file, are you going to take responsibility?”

Amelia bit back her irritation. “Mr. David said I could look. You can stand by and watch if you want, I’ll be careful.”

“No way!” Tina snapped. “The school sent me to help sort these files. If something goes wrong, I get blamed. You two aren’t touching anything!”

Amelia looked to Mr. David, hoping for help. But the sleazeball just glanced at Tina and immediately took her side. “Tina’s right. If you go rifling through the files and something happens, who’s going to answer for it?”

So that was it—no telling when the files would be sorted, and they weren’t allowed to look for themselves. He was clearly stalling, deliberately making things difficult for her.
