He was a skilled kisser—maybe it was that he knew exactly where her sensitive spots were, or maybe he just knew how to unravel her with so little effort.
Their lips and tongues tangled together, and Amelia’s resistance faded with each passing second.
Daniel let out a low, amused chuckle before releasing her. His hand traced up to her delicate neck, his mouth shifting to press a kiss against her ear, flushed and red as a cherry.
Amelia shivered, a soft whimper escaping her like a startled kitten. Daniel took his time, patient and in control, his fingers slipping beneath the hem of her shirt.
The cool air at her waist snapped her back to her senses. She pushed at him, breathless. “Wait—no!”
Daniel grinned, a roguish glint in his eye. “Relax. It’s a small place—I can hold off until we get home.”
“At home isn’t happening either!”
He paused, the teasing in his gaze dimming as realization dawned. He sat up straighter. “Right. I forgot. It’s your time of the month.”
Amelia nodded quickly, afraid he’d try something anyway.
Daniel didn’t push. He only pressed a kiss to her shining, tear-bright eyes. “Keep looking at me like that and I won’t be able to hold back.”
Amelia shut her eyes tight, squeezing them closed as if that could protect her.
After all that teasing, Daniel drove them straight back to Emerald Meadows, the place they shared.
Her period really was like a guardian angel of chastity—Daniel behaved himself, holding her quietly through the night.
Amelia curled into his arms, torn between basking in the warmth and hating herself for wanting it so badly.
She woke early the next morning, sleep chased away by the thoughts swirling in her mind.
Daniel was still out cold, his messy hair falling over his brow, his good looks undiminished even in sleep.
Carefully, she lifted his arm from around her and inched toward the edge of the bed, slipping out as quietly as she could.
Just as she closed the bathroom door behind her, Daniel stirred awake.
“Amelia?”
She froze with the pregnancy test box half-opened in her hands. “What?”
“Why are you up so early?”
She heard his footsteps approach. Amelia held her breath, determined to get this over with quickly.
It was a simple process, really, but the man waiting outside was making her nervous.
The cool, silky fabric startled her, making her twitch.
Daniel was always up to something—his ties weren’t just for his neck. Amelia kicked at him, then sat up and yanked the tie free. He cooperated, bowing his head for her.
She’d tied his tie so many times, she could do it with her eyes closed.
He watched her, a soft laugh escaping as he took in her lowered gaze. “So obedient.”
Obedient for what? It wasn’t as if he actually loved her.
Annoyance prickled at Amelia. She pushed him away. “Go already. Let me sleep in peace.”
Daniel made a clicking noise with his tongue. This woman—her moods changed with the wind.
“I’m heading to work. Remember to eat something for lunch.”
As he turned, he accidentally knocked her purse off the nightstand.
Amelia had been in a hurry grabbing the pregnancy test that morning and hadn’t zipped her bag. Now, a new box of unopened pregnancy tests spilled across the floor.
Her heart plummeted right along with the bag.
