Within seconds, her breathing was completely thrown off.
Amelia quickly cast her eyes downward, twisting her wrist in a desperate attempt to break free.
Unseen by her, Daniel’s face froze for a few heartbeats. His eyes widened, as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Three years’ worth of longing crashed over him, leaving his breaths shallow and uneven. He was terrified this was all just a dream—one careless move and she’d disappear.
His gaze lingered, and he blinked back the sudden sting in his eyes.
Amelia couldn’t care less if he was on the verge of tears. His grip tightened with every passing second, as if he might crush her bones. Finally, she couldn’t hold back anymore. “Let go of me!”
“…It’s really you.” His voice hadn’t changed at all.
Daniel’s breath came light and ragged as he reached out to touch her face. She recoiled, turning sharply so that only the softness of her hair brushed his fingertips. The sensation grounded him—it was real. She was real. Not a dream.
“If you don’t let go, you’re going to break my wrist!” Amelia hadn’t expected her luck to be this bad tonight. Not only had the past come back to haunt her, it had done so with a vengeance—and a death grip.
Daniel finally realized how hard he was holding on, easing his grasp, but only by a little. She was still well and truly trapped.
Amelia twisted her wrist twice more, but his grip didn’t budge. Her temper flared. “Are you deaf? I said let go!”
“Let’s just say I am,” Daniel rasped, his voice hoarse and trembling. He reached up, cupping her cheek. “Where have you been these past three years?”
“None of your business!”
Amelia jerked her chin toward the other side of the room. “Over there. Now let me go before your girlfriend gets jealous.”
Daniel didn’t bother turning. He shot a glance at the stunned woman lingering nearby and felt a wave of irritation. “I don’t know her. Finley dragged her along—she barely said a word to me before throwing herself at my side—”
Amelia raised a hand, cutting him off. “You don’t have to explain. We’re divorced. You could sleep with someone right here and it wouldn’t matter to me. Now, would you please let go?”
Daniel’s eyes darkened as he stared at her. This woman—her face, her voice—she hadn’t changed a bit. Neither had her determination to be rid of him.
Some things really never change.
He forced down the storm in his chest, speaking each word with deliberate care. “Who told you we’re divorced? Did you ever actually see the papers?”
