Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 215

Amelia froze, looking up at him.

Daniel had her cornered—one hand gripping her wrist, the other pressed against the wall, boxing her in with barely any space to move. He lowered his gaze to meet hers, their eyes locking.

“Don’t look at me like that. I don’t care what you say—I never signed those divorce papers.”

A sharp jolt ran through Amelia, a suspicion flickering in her mind that she didn’t dare pursue.

Maybe she just looked too adorably bewildered, because Daniel let out a low laugh that rumbled in his chest. He cupped her cheek, just like he used to, and her skin was still as soft and smooth as he remembered—he couldn’t bring himself to let go.

“Our marriage certificate? Locked in my bank’s safe deposit box. Tighter than any of my company’s trade secrets. If you want it, you’d have to blow up the bank.”

Amelia’s heart plummeted, sinking deeper and deeper.

Somehow, she found the strength to shove him away and turn to leave.

“Amelia…”

“Don’t follow me!” She spun around, her words cold and sharp as a drawn knife. “Or I swear I’ll blow this place sky-high and we’ll go down together!”

Maybe Daniel really thought she’d do it, because he stopped. He didn’t chase her, just watched her with burning eyes, following her retreating figure until she disappeared from sight—and even then, he couldn’t tear his gaze away.

Amelia’s heart hammered in her chest, a wild mix of anger and panic. She stood outside the lounge for two minutes, trying to steady herself before finally going back in.

Inside, Sophia and Ruby were playing rock-paper-scissors. The loser had to balance a pistachio on her head—Sophia had a whole crown, while Ruby had just one, grinning in triumph.

“It’s getting late,” Amelia said. “Why don’t you take Ruby home and put her to bed? I’ll wait here for Zachary.”

Sophia shook her head, sending pistachios scattering to the floor while Ruby giggled, showing off her bright white teeth.

As she dialed Zachary, Sophia sighed. “Amelia, you’ve raised a little mind-reader. How does she always know what I’m about to play?”

Amelia removed the pistachio from Ruby’s head, cracked it open, and popped it in her mouth. “She doesn’t always win. Didn’t she just let you have that last round?”

“Mr. Harper.” Amelia barely waited for him to sit down before blurting out, “I’m officially divorced from Daniel, right? Do you have the certificate? Or even the court order?”

Zachary, looking travel-worn, paused as he unbuttoned his coat. “It’s complicated. Let me explain.”

A chill swept through Amelia.

So Daniel hadn’t been bluffing. There really was no divorce.

“How is this possible?” The words tasted bitter on her tongue.

Zachary sighed. “You and Mr. Campbell had proof of separation, but he retracted the evidence you’d submitted and firmly denied any infidelity during the marriage. On top of that, he made it very clear he wasn’t willing to divorce. With all that, the court couldn’t grant it.”

Amelia buried her face in her hands, letting out a heavy breath. Words like ‘stifled’ or ‘depressed’ didn’t even begin to describe how she felt.

After a long silence, she lowered her hands and gave a dry, rueful smile. “If only I weren’t allergic to alcohol.”
