Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 234

Night had fallen thick and heavy, but Daniel’s scowl was darker still. “Do you need me to remind you again? We’re not divorced. We’re still legally married.”

Amelia’s voice was calm, almost weary. “So, just because we’re still married, I’m not allowed to have male friends or a normal social life?”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “So you’re telling me you’re just friends? Nothing happened between you two?”

Amelia stopped beside the car, the soft glow of the streetlamp stretching their shadows across the pavement. The night seemed to wrap around them, isolating their confrontation from the rest of the world.

“I don’t feel like answering that.” Her eyes were clear and bright, but there was a chill behind the clarity. “Daniel, men and women can share bonds that aren’t about romance. If you respected me at all, you’d trust me.”

Trust? The word felt like a bitter pill. Daniel clenched his jaw. “Don’t use trust as an excuse. I saw the way he looked at you.”

“It takes one to know one,” Amelia shot back, expression unflinching. “Maybe if your own conscience were clear, you wouldn’t see filth in everyone else.”

“If he doesn’t have feelings for you, I’ll cut off my own head and use it for a soccer ball.”

“Fine. Even if he does have feelings for me, I don’t return them. If you can’t trust him, you could at least trust me.” Amelia’s voice rose, sharp with frustration and a hint of vengeance. “Is trusting me really that hard?”

Something about her words sounded oddly familiar. Where had he heard them before?

Daniel hesitated, lost in thought for a split second. In that moment, Amelia pulled the car door open and slid inside.

He reached for the handle, but she was quicker. With a decisive click, she locked the doors.

“Amelia!” He banged his palm on the window, his voice muffled by the glass. “Why should I trust you? You’ve got a history!”

History, my ass.

He wanted to talk about skeletons in the closet? Who was he to judge—he’d been caught sneaking around with his mistress three years ago.

Amelia’s face was unreadable as she floored the gas and sped off, leaving Daniel stumbling, off-balance, and seething in her wake.

He straightened up, annoyance prickling under his skin. Suddenly, a memory flashed through his mind—the echo of a phrase. He remembered now: he’d once asked her to trust him, too.

The next morning, Amelia arrived early at the research institute. Robert was already there, and greeted her as she walked in.

“Everything all right last night?”

Amelia knew what he was referring to. “Sorry about that. He’s got a bit of a temper. Don’t take it personally.”

Robert smiled, brushing it off. “No worries.” He hesitated, then asked casually, “From the way you two were talking, it sounded like you were arguing?”

There was no point denying it—he’d seen enough. “Yeah. We’re getting divorced.”

Robert didn’t seem surprised. “That explains why you’ve never mentioned Ruby’s father.”

Amelia paused, then said quietly, “Daniel isn’t Ruby’s father.”

Robert blinked, caught off guard. “Wait—what?”
