Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 235

“You’re not going to blab, are you?” Amelia teased.

Robert’s expression twisted, as if he was still processing her words. “I’d never gossip about your private life. Sorry, I was out of line.”

Amelia gave him a gentle, knowing smile.

Honestly, she could’ve dodged his question, but Daniel’s warning yesterday had stuck with her. Whether Daniel was being paranoid or just overly cautious, she knew she needed to be careful.

Her answer had subtly made it clear she wasn’t exactly the picture-perfect woman. If Robert had any ideas in that direction, this should put them to rest.

The morning flew by in a blur of work. When lunch break rolled around, Robert asked if she’d help him look at cars—he needed something reliable for getting around. In the end, he picked out a luxury SUV, price tag hovering around a hundred grand.

She thought it was overkill for just commuting, but it wasn’t her money. People could spend their cash however they liked.

Watching Robert pay that kind of money without batting an eye, you’d think he was buying groceries, not a car. Everything about his manner screamed old money—Amelia could tell he’d grown up surrounded by comfort, though she never asked about his family, and never would.

After work, Robert said, “You gave up your lunch break to help me car shop. Let me buy you dinner.”

“It’s nothing, really.” Amelia slung her bag over her shoulder. “I promised Ruby I’d have dinner at home.”

“Bring Ruby along. I haven’t seen her in weeks.”

“Some other time. She’s got a craft project from school tonight.”

Robert didn’t press. “Alright, next time.”

Amelia slid into her car. She’d barely pulled out from the research center when she spotted Daniel’s car.

It wasn’t that she’d gone out of her way to look for him—but his sports car was hard to miss, sleek and ostentatious, and with the window rolled down, Daniel’s face—impossibly striking, even more attention-grabbing than his car—was right there. Hard not to notice.

But Amelia didn’t stop. She kept her eyes fixed ahead, pressed the gas, and drove right past him.

Gone?

Just like that?

Daniel stared into his rearview mirror, watching her taillights vanish into the distance, his gaze turning cold and stormy.

Was he invisible or something? She couldn’t have at least slowed down to say hi?

Serves me right.

With a bitter smile, he gripped the wheel and pulled away.

Daniel haunted her like a ghost for a week. By the second week, he was gone.

Truth be told, his presence or absence made no difference to Amelia. As long as he kept his distance, she could pretend he didn’t exist.

But Ruby noticed. Perched in her car seat, she swung her little legs and chirped, “That man didn’t come today.”

Amelia glanced at her daughter in the rearview mirror. This kid had treated Daniel like a fixture in the scenery lately.

“He’s got a job, honey. Grown-ups can’t always hang around.”

She remembered how busy Daniel had always been—managing the family business, and after Violet came back from abroad, he was even more swamped, juggling work and looking after his fragile Porcelain Doll.
