Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 251

She thought about it while eating, while daydreaming, even right before falling asleep—but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember a thing.

On the third morning, she suddenly slapped her thigh.

The sharp sound startled Mr. Ethan Campbell. “What is it?” he asked.

Grandma Edith turned to her husband with a grave expression. “I have a great-granddaughter.”

Everyone in the Campbell family knew Daniel was the only grandson, and if there was a great-granddaughter, she could only be Daniel’s child. But Daniel didn’t have a daughter—in fact, his wife had packed up and left some time ago.

Ethan chalked it up to Edith’s memory slipping again and humored her, “Of course, of course. Actually, there are two of them. Twins, you know.”

Edith grew agitated. “Why don’t you believe me? I’m telling you, she looks just like Amelia, but her personality—she’s the spitting image of that rascal. She’s got a bit of her dad and a bit of her mom.”

Ethan played along. “Well, that’s wonderful. Daniel should bring her home to meet us sometime.”

His words were clearly just to placate her. Edith’s face clouded with frustration. “None of you ever believe a word I say.”

Ethan hastily tried to soothe her. “Of course we believe you. What’s her name? How old is she? Does she take after her mom or dad?”

Edith couldn’t answer any of those questions.

The more she thought, the more muddled her mind became. Every now and then, a flicker of a memory would slip by, but before she could grab hold of it, it was gone.

That night, Edith suddenly sat bolt upright in bed. She slipped on her slippers and headed out the door.

...

“How can someone just disappear like that?”

“Grandma…”

It took her a long moment to choke out the word, her voice thick. She’d thought she’d never see the Campbell family again, let alone have one of them show up at her front door.

Edith beamed, gently nudging Ruby toward Amelia. She looked at the grown-up, then at the child, and as she did, her eyes shimmered with tears.

Amelia felt her own emotions well up. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she asked softly, “Grandma, what are you doing out here alone? Did you tell anyone you were leaving?”

Edith waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t mind them.”

Amelia frowned. “Did you sneak out by yourself?”

Edith herded everyone into the house with the stubbornness of a child. “I’m not going back. It’s no fun there. I want to stay here and play with my great-granddaughter. No one’s sending me away!”
