She couldn’t risk upsetting Grandma Edith; her health was too fragile. There was no point in arguing with her, so Amelia had no choice but to settle the old woman in first, and then have Ashley contact the Campbell family.
Once she was comfortable, Grandma Edith’s mood lifted. She played catch with Ruby, laughing and letting loose as if she were right at home, all her worries melting away.
Half an hour later, the doorbell rang. Ashley answered it, revealing Daniel and Mr. Ethan Campbell standing on the doorstep.
A tangle of emotions washed over Amelia. She took a moment to compose herself before walking over and greeting him respectfully, “Grandpa.”
Mr. Campbell looked as though there was a lot he wanted to say but couldn’t find the words. In the end, all he managed was, “You’re back.”
Grandma Edith glanced toward the door at the sound of voices, but only for a moment. She turned away just as quickly, making it clear she wasn’t happy to see the grandfather and grandson together under this roof.
“Edith,” Mr. Campbell called her by her first name, his voice gentle. “I’ve come to take you home.”
Grandma Edith acted as if she hadn’t heard a thing. With no other choice, Mr. Campbell stepped inside, trying to coax her as he reached for her hand. “Come on now, let’s go home…”
But his words trailed off as soon as he caught sight of Ruby’s cherubic face. The resemblance to Amelia was striking. Still, on the way over, he’d already asked Daniel, and Daniel insisted they’d done a paternity test—Ruby wasn’t his child.
Mr. and Mrs. Campbell didn’t know all the details between Daniel and Amelia. All they knew was that Amelia had filed for divorce three years ago. By now, the divorce must have been finalized.
Three years had passed. So much had changed. Amelia had remarried, started a new family, and had a child of her own.
Mr. Campbell wasn’t sure who deserved the blame—his grandson or himself.
Given her current state, she just might try something drastic. Mr. Campbell panicked, rushing to snatch the jump rope from her hands. “No one hates you! Don’t be silly. You’re just overthinking things again.”
Amelia hurried to reassure her as well. “Grandma, I never said I minded.”
Daniel, on the other hand, remained utterly unbothered, one hand in his pocket, even finding time to lay the blame on Amelia. “Look at what you’ve done. Upset Grandma again. She loves you most, but you’re the least filial of all.”
If Amelia had a jump rope of her own, she might have been tempted to strangle Daniel with it.
Grandma Edith’s emotions swung wildly as she shifted between sobbing and wailing, but her meaning was clear: I’m not leaving. If you try to take me away, I’ll hang myself right here.
Amelia could only sigh in defeat and relent. “Is a week all right? Grandma, you can stay for a week.”
