Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 270

Her lips always looked soft, but the things she said were anything but gentle. Daniel didn’t seem to mind, though. He just blurted out a totally unrelated question: “Did Violet ever give you a hard time behind my back?”

Amelia frowned. That was ancient history.

“Does it even matter now?”

“It matters.”

He sounded so earnest that Amelia couldn’t help but snap, “So what if she did? Are you planning to fight my battles for me now?”

The words were barely out before she regretted them. The more they dredged up the past, the messier it got. They were supposed to be discussing a divorce, not reminiscing about old wounds.

But Daniel’s expression grew even more serious. “Yeah. I’ll stand up for you.”

Amelia almost laughed out loud.

Three years ago, he’d always taken his first love’s side. Now, three years later, he’d done a full one-eighty and wanted to defend her? Was he out of his mind?

Even crazy people weren’t this inconsistent.

She decided to steer the conversation away. “Let’s not drag up the past. Let’s talk about now. When do we go file the paperwork?”

Daniel leaned back against the headboard, one hand pressed to his stomach. The pain seemed to get worse; his frown deepened.

“Could you please not mention ‘paperwork’ when I’m feeling like this? It hurts worse than the IV.”

“Fine,” Amelia said, surprisingly agreeable. “When are we getting divorced, then?”

Daniel closed his eyes and covered them with the back of his hand. “Just go. Leave me alone.”

As if she was the one desperate to stay. She’d barely moved when the doctor and a nurse came in.

The moment Daniel caught sight of the tray, a chill ran through him. Dizziness washed over his vision, and his stomach felt as if a knife were twisting inside. He nearly passed out from the pain.

They hadn’t even started the IV, but cold sweat was already beading on his forehead.

After what happened earlier, the doctor seemed to have sized Amelia up. “Could you cover his eyes for us, please? It’ll help him relax so the IV goes in easier.”

Daniel’s lips were bloodless, pressed into a thin line. His Adam’s apple bobbed nervously as he swallowed, eyelashes fluttering with unease. He’d gone from a proud lion to a helpless little deer in a matter of seconds.

He opened his eyes and, sure enough, it was a man’s hand.

A man’s hand!

Daniel’s face was pale, but his expression clouded. The doctor chuckled awkwardly. “Mrs. Campbell grabbed my hand and used it to cover your eyes. It worked pretty well, actually.”

Daniel looked around the room. “Where is she?”

“She’s already gone.”

Gone?

She knew he was afraid of needles and couldn’t even spare a few more minutes? Was that woman’s heart made of diamond?

Daniel fumed, but then another thought struck him. “So the person holding my hand just now was…”

The middle-aged nurse blushed like a schoolgirl. “Mrs. Campbell had me hold your hand for her. It seemed to work just fine, too.”

Daniel: “…”
