After leaving the hospital, Amelia got a call from Grandma Edith, who finally explained everything. That’s when Amelia learned Violet hadn’t even been in Silkwood these past three years.

“She’s been in Westwood ever since you left, Amelia. Daniel hasn’t seen her, I promise you that...”

“Grandma,” Amelia cut her off, “I don’t care about them. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”

Grandma Edith sighed. “I just don’t want any more misunderstandings between you.”

“There’s no misunderstanding,” Amelia replied, her voice as steady as her heart. “Neglect and coldness—that’s what really hurts.”

Grandma Edith fell silent.

Amelia wasn’t faking her calm. She really was at peace. Only when you care does anything have the power to upset you. She’d already peeled him out of her heart. Even if he and Violet kissed right in front of her, she doubted she’d bat an eye. Hell, she might even clap and tell them they were a perfect match.

She didn’t want to rehash the past; she just wanted to live her life. But some people have a way of showing up whether you want them to or not.

The next day, as she was leaving the research institute, a car came up behind her, not quite speeding, but hovering close—close enough to force her off the road, inch by inch, until she had no choice but to stop.

Amelia was usually pretty composed, but even she couldn’t help feeling a surge of irritation at such reckless driving. She pushed open her door, ready to unleash hell—until she saw the face behind the wheel. Mogan.

Not that surprising, she guessed. Violet was back in Silkwood; Mogan would surely follow.

Given his boorish driving, Amelia could already guess why he was here.
