“How was I supposed to know it would pour like this?” Finley was on the verge of tears, nerves frayed. “Why is there still no news? They’re not in trouble, are they?”

The site manager rushed in, out of breath. “The rain’s coming down too hard. There’s been mudslides on the mountain before—we can’t risk sending anyone up there right now.”

At the word “mudslide,” Finley felt his hair stand on end.

“I’m calling the Campbell family. If something happens to Daniel and his wife, I’ll be in the firing line too!”

Amelia had been crouched at Daniel’s side, never taking her eyes off him.

She used a bottle cap to trickle a little water into his mouth, then tore open an entire pack of wet wipes and layered them onto his forehead and neck to bring down his fever. Really, she should’ve put some on his inner thighs as well, but the idea of pulling down his pants was just too much—she let that one slide.

Daniel’s breathing was rough and heavy. When she leaned close, she could feel the warmth of his breath against her face.

“Amelia…”

The name slipped out in a feverish mumble.

She leaned in. “I’m here… What is it?”

“You’re awful. Just left without a word… Didn’t even look back…”

He sounded lost in a dream, voice hoarse and broken. “You dumped me… You’re so terrible, I swear, when I die I’ll tell your parents all about it…”

He sounded so pitiful, so aggrieved, like she was some heartless villain who’d trampled all over his feelings, and he was the poor soul she’d left behind.

As if he even knew her real parents—she barely spoke to her adoptive ones. The things he came up with in his fever dreams were pure nonsense. And after all she’d done for him, sitting here keeping his fever down out of sheer gratitude!

Maybe she should just let him burn up.

Maybe he was feeling too sorry for himself, because suddenly he whimpered like a wounded puppy, as if the whole world had let him down.

“You broke my heart… I forgave you, and you still ignore me and yell at me… w-why…”
