Amelia set her glass down, her voice icy. “Didn’t your parents teach you basic manners? Ever heard of knocking before barging in?”
Violet shot a glance at the bed, saw that Daniel was still asleep, and dropped the pretense. “Don’t act superior with me. Just because you’re Mrs. Campbell doesn’t mean you’re anything special. You won’t be for much longer.”
“Oh, but I am special,” Amelia replied, her tone infuriatingly calm. “And even if that changes tomorrow, I’m still Mrs. Campbell today. I’ll act however I want.”
Violet gritted her teeth. “You’re just a stand-in. I don’t know what you’re so proud of. You’re sitting in my place, but one day, you’ll have to give it back.”
Amelia didn’t even blink. “You keep bringing up the ‘stand-in’ thing—are you that insecure? Or is Daniel’s hot-and-cold routine lately making you nervous?”
“If that’s the case, let me give you some advice: get used to it. Rotten vegetables don’t suddenly turn fresh. This is just the beginning. Better learn to deal with it.”
Violet’s hands curled into fists at her sides. Nothing got under her skin more than Amelia’s fake indifference. She cared, obviously, but insisted on acting like she didn’t. Violet had threatened divorce for years yet still clung to the title of Mrs. Campbell more tightly than anyone.
Pathetic. Absolutely fake.
“Amelia, you’re honestly disgusting right now.”
“The feeling’s mutual,” Amelia replied, setting the glass aside. “It’s not like you’re a sight for sore eyes, either.”
In a war of words, Violet was no match for her. Face flushed with anger, Violet snapped, “Don’t push your luck, Amelia.”
“This is me pushing my luck?” Amelia gave a sharp laugh. “If this counts, then your past antics make you a full-blown criminal. Better turn yourself in and beg for leniency.”
Violet’s eyes were blazing red, her anger about to boil over. Suddenly, she lunged at Amelia, grabbed the glass, and splashed water across her own face before pressing the empty glass into Amelia’s hand.
Amelia blinked, momentarily stunned.
What was that? Self-inflicted damage with zero payoff?
