Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 327

On a normal day, Amelia might not have given it a second thought—kids get their pants wet while playing, it’s hardly unusual. But today, with everything else piling up, she couldn’t help but worry.

When she got home, Amelia waited until Ruby had drifted off to sleep, then crept quietly from the room. She slipped Ruby’s pants into a ziplock bag.

The lab worked quickly. She’d dropped the pants off that morning, and by the afternoon, the results were in: the stains were from alcohol.

Amelia frowned. Ruby had gotten soup on her pants during lunch, but she’d changed her into clean ones before they left the house. How could there possibly be alcohol on them?

“Maybe she got it on her at the hospital?” Robert suggested.

Amelia shook her head. “Ruby was right by my side the whole time. And the stains are in the middle of her calf, not near the hem. If she brushed against something, it would be the cuffs that got dirty, not here.”

Her thoughts went back to that little Bichon from yesterday. The dog had seemed so gentle when she’d petted it—then, out of nowhere, it turned savage, lunging straight for Ruby’s leg…

Amelia pushed herself up from the table. “I’m going to the police.”

Robert went with her. The woman at the police station who’d been so accommodating yesterday had a very different attitude today.

“Didn’t we settle this yesterday? You took the money, we agreed to work it out. Now you’re back to file a report—what do you want from me?”

Amelia’s voice was steady. “I believe you deliberately incited your dog to attack.”

The woman’s tone shot up an octave. “How the hell would I make a dog attack someone? It’s not like I speak dog!”

Amelia handed over all the evidence. “You can explain it to the officer in charge.”

They spent nearly two hours at the station. The woman denied everything. Since there was no proof as to when or how the alcohol got on Ruby’s pants, or if the dog had been provoked by the smell, the investigation would take time. For now, the case couldn’t be closed.

On her way out, the woman shot Amelia a venomous glare. “You look like a decent girl, but you’re just greedy, aren’t you? If you wanted money, you could’ve just said so. Dragging me back here in the middle of the night—some nerve.”

Amelia ignored her. This was never about money. She just wanted the truth.

When it came to Ruby, she’d rather be overcautious than let anything slip by.

The temperature had dropped. A cool wind swept through the night, and as soon as Amelia stepped outside the station, a shiver ran through her and she sneezed.
