Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 50

Amelia turned to look at him.

Hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway, growing louder as someone approached.

“There you are, Mr. Campbell! Ms. Scott suddenly lost feeling in her legs. We tried calling, but you didn’t pick up—please, come quickly!”

Amelia’s lips twisted in a bitter smile.

She lifted her hand and pulled his away. He hadn’t been holding on tightly—just a gentle tug, and he let go.

“Amelia—”

The doctor, flustered and anxious, quickly pressed the button to close the elevator doors, shutting both Daniel’s voice and himself out of sight.

With her hands tucked into her pockets, Amelia felt the lingering warmth on her wrist fade in seconds.

In the hospital room, Grandma Edith was in good spirits, watching an old episode of her favorite monster-hunting show. The elderly lady had always had a thing for stories about vanquishing evil.

“Where’s that rascal?” Grandma Edith glanced at the empty space behind Amelia. “Not with his wife, not with his old grandma—where’s he run off to now?”

Amelia didn’t want to upset her, so she kept it vague. “He’s busy with something important.”

“What could be more important? The most important thing he should be doing is giving me a great-grandchild—”

Grandma Edith abruptly cut herself off, her expression shifting as if remembering something unpleasant. The irritation she felt while watching the monster fight flared up, and she clearly wanted to curse, but seeing Amelia there, she held back.

“Amelia, sweetheart, I suddenly have a craving for some cantaloupe. Would you mind running out to get some for me?”

As soon as Amelia left to buy the melon, Grandma Edith wasted no time dialing Daniel’s number.

“You’d better get yourself back here before I decide to wring your neck.”

No one knows what Daniel said, but Grandma Edith sat bolt upright, fuming. “Your wife is Amelia, not that cripple! What’s so great about that limping vixen anyway? She’s skin and bones, so thin you can’t tell front from back, and looks like some kind of barcode—if you didn’t scan her, you’d have no idea what she is!”

Grandma Edith’s face fell, like a child who just lost her favorite treat. “Oh. Will you come see me when you’re done?”

Amelia smiled, eyes curving, but there was a glimmer she couldn’t quite hide. “We’ll see.”

Probably not.

As she stepped out of the hospital, a biting wind cut through her coat, making her shiver.

Just then, her phone rang.

“Amelia, really—if I didn’t call you, were you planning to wait until the last minute to tell me?”

Amelia’s heart skipped—she suddenly remembered: today was the deadline for finalizing the list.

She’d been running around so much these past few days, she’d nearly forgotten something so important.
