Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 51

Sometimes forgetting is for the best—it saves you from endless second-guessing.

“Amelia? Are you listening?”

Amelia snapped back to the present. “Yes, I’m here.”

Oliver knew this wasn’t a decision to be made lightly. Three years—over a thousand days—wasn’t like taking a week-long vacation.

“If you’re not sure, take some more time to think. But there’s not much of it left. I need your final answer by eight tonight at the latest…”

“I’m in.”

Her voice was clear, carried on the wind. “I’m signing up. I want to join the confidential project.”

——

Once the decision was made, everything suddenly felt easier, as if the clouds had parted.

Amelia started preparing to leave.

Truth be told, there wasn’t much to do. The most important thing was to sort out the divorce before she left.

Oliver had said, barring any unexpected changes, she’d probably get her departure notice in about three months.

Three months—just enough time: one month to negotiate the divorce, another for the mandatory cooling-off period and paperwork, and a final month for herself. She could spend it wandering nearby cities, clearing her head.

After all, once she joined the confidential project, she’d be completely cut off from the outside world for three years. Just thinking about it felt a little suffocating.

That evening, her supervisor, Taylor, called to check on the progress.

“Has that jerk Daniel signed yet?”

Amelia was sorting through her research notes. She glanced at her phone—she’d messaged Daniel, but there was no response.

“He hasn’t replied. Maybe he’s busy and hasn’t seen it.”

By the next day, he was still waiting when his assistant knocked and poked his head in. “Mr. Campbell, your wife is here. She’s on her way up.”

The pen in Daniel’s hand paused mid-signature. He raised an eyebrow.

Amelia had never come to his office before. This was new. Maybe she really had cooled off.

“Grab two bottles of green grape milk from the break room. She likes that.”

Daniel stepped away from his desk and checked his reflection in the lounge mirror. Apparently thinking the tie made him look too stiff, he tugged it off and undid two buttons, letting a hint of his pale collarbone show.

He heard footsteps outside and went to meet her. Amelia was standing there, eyes calm and expressionless.

“Who’s upset my precious Kitten Turner?” Daniel smiled, ruffling her hair. “Want your husband to go beat him up?”

Amelia looked up at him, her gaze unfaltering. “No one upset me. I’m here for one thing—did you sign the divorce papers?”

The smile vanished from Daniel’s face in an instant.
