Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 69

Daniel tore up the agreement.

Nothing that displeases the boss survives for long—everyone knew that. Still, you tear up one copy, there’s always another. The Campbell Group received express deliveries every single day. Not just to the office, but to the house as well.

One morning, the housekeeper approached him. “Mr. Campbell, would you like me to send this to your office for you?”

Daniel tugged at his collar, feeling stifled, and loosened his tie. “Are you bored lately? If you’ve got so much free time, maybe you should go downstairs and polish every railing in the building.”

The housekeeper quietly hung up.

For a week, the deliveries kept coming. No one knew who let the news slip, but soon Mr. Ethan Campbell caught wind of it.

He summoned Daniel back to the family estate.

The tearoom was suffused with the delicate aroma of oolong, steam curling in the air.

“What kind of nonsense have you gotten yourself into this time?” Ethan asked, expertly steeping the tea. “What did you do to make your wife want a divorce?”

Daniel lounged in his chair, as insouciant as ever. “She’s just messing around.”

“Messing around? She’s sent you a divorce agreement every day for a week. You two sure have a unique way of spicing up your marriage.”

Daniel grinned. “So you found out. But Grandpa, these young folks’ games aren’t for the older generation to imitate.”

“Don’t get smart with me.” Ethan set his cup down with a heavy thud. “Your wife’s ready to leave and you can still joke? Are you missing a few screws?”

Worried that Ethan might actually get riled up, Daniel straightened up and grew serious. “Grandpa, we’re not getting divorced.”

Some of Ethan’s anger faded. “We all know Amelia likes you. But liking someone doesn’t mean she has to tolerate everything. Affection wears thin when disappointment piles up. Some people are willing to walk a thousand miles to be with you; they can also turn around and walk that same distance right out of your life.”

Daniel traced his finger around the rim of his teacup, staring down for a long moment. “I understand.”

Outside the tearoom, someone was pressed up against the door like a gecko, eavesdropping. A passing maid spotted the silver-haired “gecko” and was about to say something when he turned and shushed her furiously. She wisely kept quiet.

——

He hesitated, then added, “And stop mailing agreements to my office or the house. At this rate, the staff could make a second living selling wastepaper.”

“Sign, and I’ll stop sending them.”

Daniel was starting to think Amelia was sent to torment him. He had no way to deal with her. “I’ll pick you up. Let’s talk in person.”

“I’ll see you if you promise to sign.”

Amelia, like a rabbit who’d been tricked by the big bad wolf one too many times, was now an expert at dodging every trap—quick-witted and cautious.

Resigned, Daniel rubbed his temples. “Come on, sweetheart, don’t do this, please…”

She hung up without a word.

To this day, Daniel still thought she was just throwing a fit.

It only confirmed what he’d always believed: you can’t let yourself get too invested in a relationship. Give everything, and even breaking up starts to look like a childish game for attention.
