Daniel called again. Amelia ignored it and switched her phone to silent.
A few minutes later, her screen lit up once more. Expecting Daniel, she frowned and glanced at the caller ID—only to see it was the head of security from the compound.
“Amelia, finally! Thank goodness you picked up. You need to come out here, quick. There’s an old lady at the gate, raising quite the fuss and demanding to see you. We can barely hold her back!”
Amelia blinked in surprise. An old lady?
At the compound’s entrance, Grandma Edith was putting her years and sharp tongue to full use, leaving the security chief nearly in tears. The moment Amelia appeared, he looked as if he’d been saved from a firing squad.
“Amelia, your grandma is a force of nature!”
Grandma Edith flicked her silver hair with flair. “Oh, I’m nothing special—just third best in the world.”
Amelia grasped her grandmother’s hand, chilled from the wind. “Grandma, what are you doing here?”
“I missed you, so I came. You never answer my calls,” Grandma Edith replied, tugging Amelia toward her car. “Let’s talk inside. It’s cold out.”
“I had to keep the lab quiet, so I set my phone to silent,” Amelia explained, omitting the real reason for muting her phone—she hadn’t wanted to take Daniel’s calls.
Grandma Edith didn’t call her out on it. She just smiled, eyes twinkling. “I’m taking you somewhere.”
Amelia assumed her grandmother meant a bakery or a cozy café. Instead, the car drove straight to the hospital.
“Grandma, are you feeling alright?”
Grandma Edith was on a roll—and the audience was loving it.
This floor was filled with the city’s rich and powerful, but human nature is universal: everyone loves a bit of drama. One by one, patients and visitors poked their heads out, pretending to stroll by, but their ears were practically twitching.
Mortified, Amelia covered her face and tugged on her grandmother’s sleeve. “Grandma, that’s enough.”
“Enough? I’m just getting started.”
Grandma Edith yanked Amelia’s hand away and gave her a good-natured smack on the back, forcing her to stand tall. “Don’t shrink away. You’re the wife here—own it. The one who should be ashamed is the little homewrecker, not you!”
Then she turned to address the gathering crowd. “Everyone, take a good look! This room here? It’s got our resident homewrecker inside. She’s wormed her way between my grandson and granddaughter-in-law and doesn’t even have the decency to be ashamed. Her skin’s thicker than a butcher’s chopping board. Go on, get a good look—she loves attention, right? Let’s give her all the spotlight she wants!”
