Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 84

“The water really does turn black at night,” Amelia mused, hands stuffed in her coat pockets as she stared out over the lake. “Violet, do you think drowning hurts?”

The world around them was pitch dark, soundless except for rustling leaves and the wind sighing through the trees. Something uncanny hung in the air, and with Amelia’s words, the hairs on the back of Violet’s neck stood up straight. Her voice trembled. “What are you doing… I’m warning you, don’t try anything. There are security cameras everywhere—you won’t get away with it.”

Amelia didn’t bother with pretense. “Was it you who ordered Sophia to be pushed off the bridge?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

Violet denied it, and Amelia hadn’t expected her to confess.

The wind lifted strands of hair across her forehead as she narrowed her eyes at Violet. “Honestly, I think you’re pitiful. All this scheming for a man—you’d stoop to anything. If you’d just stayed in your lane, played the part of the delicate Porcelain Doll, I might’ve even respected you. But you’re disgusting. So disgusting, I can’t even pretend to be the gracious wife anymore.”

Violet gave a brittle laugh. “You talk a big game about grace, but your actions say otherwise. You wouldn’t be here tonight if you were really so forgiving.”

“If I wasn’t gracious, you’d be holed up in some dingy apartment, paying rent by the week, instead of lying pretty in a private hospital suite.” Amelia’s smile was ice-cold. “If I wasn’t gracious, your legs wouldn’t just be injured—they’d be shattered. I’d have made sure you’d never walk again.”

A fresh chill crept up Violet’s spine. She had to admit, Amelia had the same ruthless streak as Daniel. Swallowing hard, she stammered, “Did you drag me out here just to threaten me?”

“Of course not. You say I’m not gracious enough, so tonight—I’ll show you just how generous I can be.”

Amelia pointed out toward the lake, its surface black as ink. “Isn’t the lake beautiful? Tonight, I thought I’d give you the full experience—let you see just how refreshing winter water feels.”

Before Violet could react, Amelia seized her by the hair and yanked her forward.

Violet’s legs weren’t entirely useless, but they were twisted and weak; she stumbled helplessly as Amelia dragged her to the water’s edge. Before she could even scream, Amelia kicked her behind the knees and slammed a hand to the back of her neck, forcing her face into the icy lake.

The sound was almost melodic.

But the melody was cut short by hurried footsteps from behind.

“Violet!”

Well, well. Looks like the Porcelain Doll’s cavalry had arrived.

Amelia paused. Violet, hearing her name, tried to struggle upright, coughing hard.

Amelia straightened, then calmly raised her leg and, just as Violet thought she was saved, kicked her hard—sending her tumbling back into the lake.
