Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 85

Two splashes echoed in quick succession.

The first was Violet hitting the water. The second was Mogan diving in after her.

Mogan hadn’t even hesitated—he just jumped.

Daniel grabbed Amelia's hand and pulled her away, only stopping when they reached the edge of the lawn.

"Are you out of your mind?" he demanded.

Amelia turned her gaze on him.

She had the kind of eyes you could drown in—soft and glimmering, like sunlight glancing off a spring lake. But when she looked at you coldly, they were sharp as icicles dangling from a bare winter branch—beautiful, but frigid and merciless.

"Sorry," she said, her voice eerily calm. "Didn’t mean to hurt your first love."

Daniel frowned. Her composure was unnerving. "Why did you do that? She could have died, Amelia."

"Sophia almost died too."

"What are you talking about?"

Before Daniel could press her further, Mogan emerged from the water, soaked to the bone, carrying a dripping and shivering Violet in his arms.

Violet clung to him, trembling uncontrollably. Her coughing and sobbing mingled, painting as pitiful a sight as anyone could imagine.

Mogan stopped beside Amelia, his tone icy.

"Ms. Turner, relationships are never simple, but no matter what’s happened between you two, you shouldn’t have pushed Violet into the lake. Let’s put the past behind us, but this—this I can’t just let go."

He said "Ms. Turner," not "Mrs. Campbell." Amelia understood—that was both a warning and a sign that he was furious.

Before he left, Mogan shot Daniel a long, pointed look.

"If you can’t prove it, why do something so reckless? Amelia, if something’s wrong, you can come to me. I’d help you. There’s no need—"

"Would you?" Amelia stared him down. "Did you help me during that whole thesis mess?"

Daniel froze.

Amelia brushed off his hands and forced a pale smile. "Between me and Violet, you’ll always choose her. Never me."

A shadow of helplessness flickered in Daniel’s eyes. "That’s not true. If you’d just told me, I’d have handled it. Anything would be better than you acting out like this. Did you even think—what if Violet had died—"

"If Violet had died, you’d make me pay with my life, wouldn’t you?"

Amelia’s eyes were clear and cold. "Well, she’s not dead. Maybe she’s just traumatized, maybe she’ll catch a cold and it’ll affect her precious legs. What do you want from me, Daniel? Compensation? Should I give her my legs?"

Daniel closed his eyes, exhaling a long, weary breath. "To me, there’s nothing in this world more precious than your life."
