After Amelia left, Ethan let out a heavy sigh.
He picked up the phone and dialed, his voice weary. “Edith, there’s nothing more I can do. Amelia’s made up her mind—she’s set on divorcing Daniel.”
Grandma Edith was so furious she pounded her fist against her chest at home. “I was brave, clever, and beautiful in my day, so how did I end up with such a useless grandson? Can’t even keep his wife happy—what good is he for anything else?”
Whenever Grandma Edith was upset, Daniel was sure to catch her wrath.
Daniel stood leaning against the wall, exhaustion etched in his features. He massaged his temples. “Enough. Please, stay out of this. I’ll handle it myself.”
“Handle it yourself? We’ve all seen how well that’s gone!” Edith snapped. “Let me make myself perfectly clear—Amelia is the only granddaughter-in-law I’ll ever acknowledge. As for that vixen, she can forget about ever becoming part of the Campbell family, in this life or the next!”
As her words trailed off, a gentle female voice called from inside, “Daniel, dinner’s ready! Come eat before it gets cold.”
Grandma Edith’s tone shot up an octave in her outrage. “Are you still with that woman?”
“Alright, alright, let’s drop it. You should have dinner too,” Daniel muttered, ending the call before walking inside, where the meal was already set on the table.
Mogan gave him a cold look, ladling soup into a bowl. “You said you’d make things right for Violet. It’s been two days—where’s the justice you promised?”
Daniel slouched back in his chair, tossing his phone onto the table with a dull thud.
“This time, Amelia was in the wrong. I’ve already dealt with her. Unless Mr. White needs to see a video of me scolding my wife?”
“Enough. If Daniel says it’s handled, then let’s just eat. I’m starving.”
She picked up a piece of steamed fish and placed it on Mogan’s plate. “You love sea bass—eat up.”
Then she offered Daniel a piece of braised short rib. “Daniel, the ribs look good tonight, you should have some too.”
Since Violet seemed content to let it go, Mogan couldn’t say anything more, even if he was still displeased.
Daniel pushed his food around half-heartedly, barely eating a few bites.
Whether it was because he really had no appetite or for some other reason, the short rib Violet served him remained untouched until the very end.
