Amelia waited another two days.
It was as if Daniel had dropped off the face of the earth—no calls, no messages, nothing.
Did Grandpa Ethan not tell Daniel?
Unable to sit still any longer, Amelia picked up her phone and dialed his number.
She barely had time to speak before Daniel cut her off. “I’m busy, make it quick. And if it’s about the divorce, forget it—because that’s not a quick conversation.”
Amelia couldn’t understand it. How complicated could it be? Just sign the papers, head to the courthouse, and exchange one certificate for another. Simple.
“Sign the papers. Tomorrow’s Wednesday—a workday—perfect time to settle this,” she said.
“I have a meeting coming up. Gotta go.” Daniel hung up before she could reply.
Listening to the dial tone, Amelia’s delicate brows knitted together. What game was he playing now?
Remembering how she’d kicked Violet into the lake, Amelia couldn’t help but wonder if Daniel was plotting some elaborate revenge.
Maybe he planned to drag out the divorce, just to drive her crazy. Or maybe he’d promise to sign, only to bail at the last minute, leaving her standing alone at the courthouse, seething.
Either way, it was infuriating.
Amelia sat in her car for a while, stewing. She couldn’t let this drag on. Daniel had all the time in the world, but she didn’t. In just two months, she’d be leaving for good, and she didn’t want to go with “Mrs. Campbell” still hanging over her head.
She’d already spoken to Grandpa Ethan, but two days had passed and nothing had changed. She doubted Grandpa Ethan had forgotten to tell Daniel. There was only one explanation left.
The pressure from Grandpa Ethan wasn’t strong enough. Daniel still had room to stall.
Frustrated, Amelia drove to Grandpa Ethan’s company.
Grace was about to head in for a full-body spa treatment, so she suggested the spa lounge as their meeting spot.
After her appointment, dressed in a bathrobe, Grace emerged to find that Amelia had already been waiting for half an hour.
It was a lazy afternoon. Grace lifted a delicate floral tea to her lips and took a slow sip. “You could’ve come in for a massage. No point in waiting out here all bored.”
Amelia shook her head. “No, thank you. I actually wanted to talk to you about something.”
Grace blew gently on the tea, watching petals swirl. “What is it?”
“I want to divorce Daniel,” Amelia said.
Grace nearly spat out her tea, barely managing to set her cup down as she coughed, covering her mouth to regain her composure. After a moment, she looked up, eyes wide.
“I’m sorry, did I hear you right? You and Daniel… want to get divorced?”
