Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 89

Amelia smiled. “You heard right. Your hearing is as sharp as ever.”

Grace’s elegant features faltered, unable to mask her surprise. “But you and Daniel seem fine. Why on earth are you getting divorced?”

Amelia couldn’t quite figure Grace out. In her memory, Grace had never really approved of her—she’d always looked down on Amelia for lacking family connections or status, as if marrying into the Campbell family was a once-in-a-lifetime stroke of luck for someone so ordinary.

Given Grace’s long-standing disapproval and constant nitpicking, Amelia had thought her mother-in-law would be delighted at the prospect of a divorce. Yet here Grace was, not at all pleased—if anything, she seemed a little regretful.

Amelia answered plainly. “We just don’t get along anymore. It’s impossible for us to go on like this.”

Not getting along? Grace raised an eyebrow. From the outside, they had always seemed perfectly fine.

A strange look flickered across Grace’s face, as if she’d thought of something. “Is it… well, is it that issue?”

Amelia blinked, confused. “What issue?”

“You know, with Daniel. That issue.” Grace’s voice grew insistent. “If that’s the problem, don’t rush into anything. Medicine’s come a long way. If you both face it together, I’m sure it can be treated.”

Amelia was silent.

Taking her at her word, Grace immediately reached for her phone. “Let me call Dr. Wood—he’ll know which specialist is the best in this area.”

“It’s not that,” Amelia cut in. “Daniel’s fine now. That side of things… works just fine.”

Grace paused, phone in hand, looking up. “So then why—?”

“It’s just what I said. We don’t get along. There’s no way for us to keep living together.”

Grace slowly set her phone down.

After a moment, she let out a sigh. “So this is final?”

Amelia nodded, then hesitated. “I have no problem with it, but Daniel… He might need you to talk to him.”

Grace frowned, clearly confused. “Isn’t this something you both decided? Why would I need to get involved?”

At last, she managed to swallow her pride and speak. “Fine. I’ll talk to Daniel myself. Don’t worry—he won’t bother you. Just promise you won’t come running back to him in the future.”

Amelia had accomplished her mission. She picked up her bag and walked out.

But when she got to her car and reached for her keys, she realized her phone was missing. She searched her bag and pockets, then remembered she’d probably left it on the living room sofa.

She retraced her steps.

Grace was still sitting exactly where Amelia had left her, back turned, already on the phone.

From her tone, it sounded like she was calling Mr. Frank Campbell overseas.

“She actually wants to divorce Daniel? And the way she talked, like he wasn’t good enough for her. We never looked down on her, but now she’s looking down on us? Unbelievable.”

“What’s the point in trying to talk her out of it? Daniel’s still got his pick of heiresses. Any one of them would be better than Amelia.”
