Chloe struggled out of lan’s car and immediately recognized they were at the Hamilton Private Airfield.
Not far away, the helicopter’s rotors were spinning, the blades slicing through the air with a deafening roar.
Mitchell and a few bodyguards stood respectfully by the helicopter’s hatch.
Chloe was instantly gripped by panic.
She realized Ian was taking her somewhere far away.
No matter what, she couldn’t let Ian take her out of Ostville.
Chloe forced herself to steady her breathing, then suddenly spun around and tried to dive back into the car.
Ian blocked her without breaking a sweat, and with an easy motion, shut the car door behind her.
Chloe recoiled, her panic showing. “Ian, I have to work tomorrow! Where are you even taking me?” she pleaded.
Ian stared at Chloe with an intense silence, his eyes never leaving her.
Without another word, he seized her wrist possessively and pulled her straight toward the helicopter.
Chloe couldn’t shake him off, so she suddenly squatted down on the spot, stubbornly refusing to budge.
Afraid he might hurt her, Ian had no choice but to stop in his tracks.
Chloe squatted down in front of Ian, her voice trembling as she demanded, “What exactly are you planning to do at this hour of the night?”
Ian bent down and grabbed her, pulling her up to her feet with little effort.
He slid one arm around her waist and clamped his other hand on the back of her neck, forcing her to look him straight in the eyes.
“Tell me, Chloe,” Ian’s voice was rough and strained. “Why him? What do you see in Philip?”
His words sounded like they were ripped straight from his chest, heavy with emotion.
“Just tell me what it is you like about him. Whatever it is, I’ll change–I’ll be better than him if that’s what you want,” Ian pleaded, voice ragged.
“You can ask anything of me, just don’t pick him!” lan added, tightening his hold on her,
They stood face–to–face, just inches apart, locked in a confrontation so intense it was almost overwhelming.

Chloe knew she’d only end up getting hurt if she tried to stand her ground against fan, so she chose to back down.
She deliberately reached out and took Ian’s hand, her voice gentle and steady as she tried to calm him.
“Ian, just take it easy, alright? It’s really late–let’s go home first. Once you’ve cooled off, we’ll find another time to really talk, just the two of us.”
The look of panic in Chloe’s eyes hurt Ian so much it almost killed him.
He fought to keep himself together as he reached out, letting his rough fingertips softly brush her cheek and gently wipe away the tears at the corner of her eye.
Chloe didn’t push him away–she was trying her hardest to calm Ian down, afraid that if she resisted even a little, he’d break down completely.
Ian’s intense gaze searched Chloe’s face, his voice rough but absolutely resolute.
“Chloe, I made myself stay away from you–just so you wouldn’t hate me,” Ian said, his tone gritty and determined.
“But the more I did that, the more things just fell apart between us,” he added, regret thick in his voice.
Chloe took the opportunity to say, “How about we find somewhere to sit down and actually talk about this?”
After saying that, she cautiously tugged Ian back with her, testing to see if he’d follow her lead.
But Ian just stood there, refusing to budge.
Chloe looked back at him, and Ian’s voice broke with raw emotion: “Chloe, I know I screwed up. I want to make things right–why won’t you let me try, not even once?”
When playing nice didn’t get her anywhere, Chloe switched gears and went for the tough approach.
She stared straight into Ian’s eyes and shot back, “Ian, what you did to me hurt for real. Do you honestly think just saying ‘sorry‘ is enough for me to forgive you?”
Ian looked like he was about to lose it.
Before Chloe could react, he pulled her tightly into his arms.
He held on, refusing to let go even as Chloe struggled, his voice strained–full of helplessness and a kind of careful desperation, like he was afraid of breaking her all over again.
“We’ve known each other since we were kids, Chloe. You and 1–we’ve shared so many good times together. Even when you were my wife for those three years, there were some really sweet moments, weren’t there?” lan said, emotion swirling in his voice.
Holding her tighter, Ian pleaded in a low, rough voice, “Chloe, please–just give me one more chance. I

promise, I won’t ever break your heart again.”
Chloe stopped fighting, finally just letting lan hold her, her body tense with resignation.
Chloe retorted, her voice shaking with pain and anger. “Ian, I was never the one you truly loved, and you never really wanted me as your wife. All your happiness–all your joy with me–was only when we were in bed. You could find that with anyone, not just me. So please, can’t you just let me go?”
“That’s not it!” Ian was on the verge of breaking down, desperation raw in his voice. “Chloe, I’m begging you- please, don’t see me that way!”
Ian’s grip on her arms tightened instinctively. “Let’s just go home, please? It’s always been you, Chloe. I swear, I’ve never loved anyone else–you’re all I care about!”
Chloe reminded him, keeping her voice as steady as she could, “Ian, your engagement to Miss Goodwin is right around the corner–we’re both supposed to be moving forward with our lives. You need to wake up and realize that this…. all it’s doing is making my life more complicated.”
Ian’s tone was desperate, on the edge of unraveling. “I’m not marrying anyone. It’s you and only you, Chloe- just tell me: what would it take for you to actually forgive me?”
Chloe was squeezed in Ian’s arms so tightly she couldn’t even move, let alone break free.
With no way out, she had to swallow her pride and softly beg lan to let her go.
“Ian, you’ve always been so calm, so distant and dignified–you used to always keep it together. This isn’t you. Can’t you just ” Chloe pleaded, her voice shaking.
“Back then!” Ian interrupted her, his voice cracking with emotion, barely holding it together.
He loosened his grip a little and lowered his gaze to Chloe, his eyes red and wild.
His voice broke as he choked out, “Back then, I thought you’d never leave me–not ever!”
They stared each other down for a long moment until Chloe finally broke the stare, lowering her eyes.
Back then, even Chloe herself believed it was impossible she’d ever walk away from lan. Not in this life.
Death would have been easier than leaving him.
Jan was hanging on by a thread, his emotions swinging wildly between desperation and anger.
Chloe’s silence only made him more furious. “Why? Why can you joke around and chat so easily with everyone else–but when it comes to me, you just freeze up? Why is it so hard for you to talk to me?”
Ian’s voice cracked as he broke down. “So I screw up, and that’s it? It’s like you’re giving me a death sentence. You won’t even let me try to make things right?”
Ian’s voice was raw with pain as he demanded, “Chloe, is your cold shoulder really how you’re planning to punish me for the rest of my life?”

He was bent over in front of Chloe, almost bowing, his eyes red and wild, voice shaking to the point of breaking. “Chloe, I’m your lan–your big brother, remember? Please… come home with me.”
And when he got out those last words, the tears he’d been holding back finally broke free, streaming uncontrollably down his cheeks.
