Chapter 249
Patrick jolted at the sudden voice.
He turned and saw lan lying in bed, now awake, and cleared his throat.
Patrick, with a straight face, explained, “Your sister was snoring, so I leaned in to check.”
lan shut his eyes, looking annoyed.

Mia woke up at the noise. When she saw lan lying there with a white cloth draped over him, she immediately burst into tears.
Patrick, clueless about what was happening, jolted in surprise once again.
Before Patrick could process anything, Mia flung herself onto the bed, bawling her eyes out as if the world was ending.
“Ian, my own brother!” Mia cried.
“You’re the only brother I’ve got. The Hamilton Group is counting on you to bring home the money–if you die, what’s going to happen to us?”
“Chloe might’ve given up on you, but you still have Mom, Dad, Grandpa Edward, and me! How could you be so weak? Seriously, just drop dead on us like that?”
“Waaaaah….”
Mia’s dramatic meltdown left both guys in the room–one in bed, one standing–totally at a loss for words.
Just as lan was reaching out to comfort her, Mia smacked him right in the stomach. “Ian, you still haven’t given me your bank password! Waaaah…”
lan’s legs went rigid from the pain and he almost blacked out then and there.
Patrick rolled his eyes. “Mia, what are you doing–hosting a whole funeral right now?”
Patrick quickly dragged Mia off lan, whipped away the white cloth, and propped lan up on the bed.
Mia took a while to stop bawling, and when she finally blinked her eyes open and saw lan was alive and kicking, she was completely bewildered. “Wait, Ian, you’re not dead?”
Ian, still clutching his stomach and looking seriously annoyed, grumbled, “Go get your brain checked.”
Mia pouted. “Patrick, lan just called me stupid”
Patrick shot Ian a glance. “Come on, she’s just worried about you. Why are you giving her a hard time?”

lan snorted, “Weren’t you the one who started it?”
Mia blinked, totally stumped. “Huh?”

Feeling sheepish, Patrick half coaxed, half tricked Mia into leaving the room, sending her off to snoop around at home for news–and, oh yeah, to grab some porridge for lan’s poor stomach while she was at it.
Once Mia left, Patrick quietly shut the door, grabbed a chair, and settled in beside Ian’s bed.
Patrick gave lan a pep talk. “Look, since you’ve decided to let it all go, you’ve got to learn to move on. You’re carrying the entire Hamilton Group on your shoulders; your life isn’t just about you anymore.”
Jan lay motionless, his eyes fixed on the cold, sterile ceiling.
Then, whatever crossed his mind, he squeezed his eyes shut, his face contorted with pain.
Seeing lan looking so out of it, Patrick got up with concern. “I’ll go get the doctor to check on you.”
After Patrick left, lan slowly opened his eyes.
Jan sent a quick message, and soon Mitchell came into the room. “Mr. Hamilton”
Jan braced himself and sat up, forcing his body to cooperate.
He told Mitchell, “Starting tomorrow, you don’t need to come to the company anymore.”
“Huh?” Mitchell blurted out, totally thrown for a loop.
He just stood there, completely stunned.
“Wait, did I just get fired for blabbing about the boss being sick? Mitchell thought, heart dropping.
Ian gave his orders, “Go pick the two toughest bodyguards from the family. Starting tomorrow, your main job is making sure Mrs. Hamilton stays safe.”
Mitchell’s eyes widened in alarm. “Mr. Hamilton, I’m just an office grunt–I’m nowhere near cut out
it for action or throwing punches.
Ian’s expression grew even more serious. “You just need to step in and handle any trouble or crisis around her when necessary, I’m not asking you to go and take anyone out.”
Edward, Shane, and Henry’s new wife, Violet, Andrea’s aunt–none of them were easy to deal with.
And plus the Goodwins, Chloe would definitely end up in plenty of trouble.
All this mess started because of lan, and he knew deep down it was on him to around Chloe–just so she could finally live in peace.

Mitchell fidgeted by the bed, rubbing his hands and looking nervous. “Mr. Hamilton, Mrs. Hamilton’s friends are a real handful. If they catch on to me watching her, I’m toast…”

Ian didn’t hesitate for a second. “Your pay and annual bonus? Both doubled.

Mitchell instantly straightened up, clearing his throat like he meant business. “No problem, Mr. Hamilton. I’ll make sure Mrs. Hamilton is safe–no matter what.”
Just then, Patrick strolled back in and asked, “So, what are you two up to?”
Mitchell played it safe, waving his hand. “Oh, nothing big. I was just telling Mr. Hamilton to chill at the hospital for a couple days, get back to full strength before heading in to work.”
Patrick nudged Mitchell with a half–hearted punch. “Like I’d believe a word of that.”
Mitchell ducked his head, rubbed his chest where Patrick hit him, and made a quick exit from the room, looking totally guilty.
Early the next morning, after getting himself ready, lan was about to check out of the hospital when Shane and Miranda rushed in, anxious and blocking his way.
Miranda gazed at him, both worried and exasperated. “Handle your work remotely for now–I want you to stay put here and actually recover.”
Ian brushed it off. “Mom, really. I’m fine. Just give me some medicine and I’ll be good to go.”
As Ian tried to leave, Shane planted himself in front of him, jabbing a finger in lan’s face. “You idiot, are you trying to give us all a heart attack?”
Shane snapped, “You pushed yourself into the hospital for a woman, and now you’re this sick but still won’t cooperate with the doctors. What exactly are you trying to do?”
Ian faced his father’s anger, his own expression just as dark and tense.
He looked straight at Shane, his voice icy. “Dad, wasn’t that the whole reason you had me to carry the Hamilton family’s burden?”
Ian pressed on, “My feelings, my marriage, my body, my health–do any of those even matter to you?”
“You!” Shane was left speechless by his son’s retort, his face red with anger as he stormed out and slammed the door behind him.
Ian went after him, leaving the room as well.

Patrick knew exactly what Miranda wanted–she was after Chloe for a talk.
He suggested gently, “Aunt Miranda, let me go instead.”
