The driver was already slumped, trembling ever since Selina’s earlier words had sent terror shooting through him.
If there really was a full investigation, his son would never see a cent of the promised money. Years ago, he had abused his wife until she left, and by chance he later crossed paths with Hannah. On the surface, he was a driver for the Hill Family, but in secret, he’d always been doing Hannah’s dirty work.
This time he’d offended the wrong people, and Hannah promised him that if he got rid of Selina, she would take care of his troubles and pay his son ten million.
The driver agreed without a second thought.
Even when Selina dragged him back to the Hill estate, he didn’t panic. He’d always believed Hannah and Matt were the real masters of the Hill Family. As for Selina, this so-called "young lady" who had just returned—she was nothing but a hanger-on, living at their mercy.
As long as Hannah opened her mouth, Selina would have to give her face and let it go as if nothing had happened.
But instead... Selina didn’t give the slightest face at all!
Selina’s words left Hannah unable to step down gracefully. Hannah bit down hard on her teeth.
"Even if you don’t trust me, there’s no need to bother the head of the family with this! You’ve just returned to the Hill Family. They dote on you, but that doesn’t give you the right to throw tantrums! Selina, don’t be so selfish. Just because you suffered a little grievance doesn’t mean the whole family needs to fight your battles. Can’t you, for once, be considerate of your elders?"
Selina slowly lifted her head, her calm gaze locking directly onto Hannah.
"A small matter? When I was in that car crash, Hill Lady, you said it was a small matter. After you heard I’d been in an accident, you still said it was a small matter. And now, with evidence of attempted murder right in front of you, you still say it’s a small matter.
So tell me, in your eyes, what counts as a big matter? Or do you simply think this ’direct bloodline of the Hill Family’ isn’t worth anything—that if I die, so be it?"
Hannah felt as though a knife had been driven straight into her face. Her throat caught painfully.
"Maybe it was a misunderstanding. The driver went toward West Cliff by mistake—he might have just taken the wrong road. And if you hadn’t insisted he stop, he wouldn’t have nearly driven off the cliff and endangered you. When you think about it, isn’t that partly your fault too? Besides, you’re standing here alive, aren’t you? Haven’t you ever heard of letting things go?"
"A misunderstanding?"
Selina gave a soft, cutting laugh, savoring the word. "Hill Lady, the truth of whether this was a mistake or an attempted murder isn’t difficult to uncover.
But it seems some people prefer to muddy the waters, handing out blame equally. Tell me then—what exactly was my mistake?
Was it my mistake not to obediently die? My mistake to return to the Hill Family? My mistake to take back the inheritance and the title of ’Hill Family heiress’?"
Her words fell like blades, silencing the entire room.
Matt’s face turned instantly ugly.
His son, Philip Hill, immediately exploded. "What kind of attitude is that?! You can’t even take a little criticism? Do you know how much of our time you’ve wasted? You didn’t even die, so why the drama? It was just a minor accident—do you need to broadcast it to the whole world and demand everyone fight for your justice? Stop being so damn selfish!" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Selina merely gave him a sidelong glance.
"When the perpetrator shows false remorse, and I refuse to forgive, suddenly I’m the one being accused of pushing too hard. If that’s how Matt raised you, then all I can say is the Hill Family truly cannot be trusted in your hands."
"You—!" Philip sputtered, livid.
"But Selina," Ava chimed in with wounded innocence, "isn’t everyone just saying this because we care about you? We’re your family. We’d never hurt you!
Yet ever since you came back, you’ve offended everyone, misjudged everyone’s good intentions. We were only worried about you..."
"So lively? What’s going on here?"
At that moment, a man’s voice cut off Ava’s words. Aaron stepped forward, and the instant his eyes landed on Selina, his heart sank.
