Henson slammed on the brakes, a silent curse running through his mind. Just how fast had Justin been driving?
He’d barely managed to arrive himself, yet Justin was already here.
Justin didn’t even wait for his car to come to a full stop before leaping out and sprinting straight toward the shadowy cottage.
Henson had meant to exchange a few words with him, but all he caught was the blur of Justin’s back disappearing into the darkness. With no choice, he hurried after him.
Inside, the dim little shack was thick with gloom. Edith sat bound to a battered old chair, a blindfold covering her eyes.
Justin flicked on his phone’s flashlight, casting a shaky beam over Edith.
Her hair, usually so neat, was a tangled mess, and red marks ringed her wrists where she’d struggled against the rope.
Justin crouched by her side and quickly began to untie the nylon cord binding her hands.
At first, the moment he touched her, Edith instinctively recoiled. But then she caught a whiff of his familiar cologne–a crisp, woodsy scent–and her tension eased.
Before Justin could say anything to soothe her, Edith’s voice rang out, steady and composed despite everything. “Justin?”
Justin’s eyes grew red, brimming with emotion. He freed her wrists in a rush, then gently pulled off the blindfold.
As her eyes adjusted to the faint light filtering through the cracks in the walls, Justin’s face slowly came into focus.
His gaze overflowed with concern and relief.

He reached up, brushing his fingers softly along her cheek. “Edith, don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
The tight knot in Edith’s chest finally loosened. For the first time since this nightmare began, she felt safe.
Oddly enough, the very first thought that flashed through her mind was relief–she’d been rescued. She’d be able to attend tomorrow’s wedding after all.
She’d been terrified at the thought of missing it, worried The Hawksley Family would think The Sumner Family couldn’t be trusted.
Henson lingered by the door, stomach rumbling–he hadn’t eaten dinner yet. Not that he needed to now; watching these two was enough to fill him up with secondhand sweetness.
Justin bent down, sweeping Edith into his arms as if she weighed nothing, and strode for the battered door.
Henson stood guard at the entrance, looking for all the world like a
grumpy sentry.
Justin gave him a quick once–over, eyes narrowed, and only then did Henson step aside.
After settling Edith into the front passenger seat, Justin helped buckle her in and gently smoothed her hair. “I’m going to talk to Henson for a minute, okay?”
Before closing the door, he added, “That guy’s Henson. He talks too much, but he’s harmless. I’ll introduce you properly next time.”
Edith blinked her round, almond–shaped eyes. “Okay.”
Henson watched Justin approach, lips pursed. “Oh, now you remember I exist?”
He’d expected at least a quick word or two, but Justin’s expression was all business. “Did you track them down? Is everything sorted?”

Henson rolled his eyes. Wasn’t this the part where you say thank you? Then again, Justin was notorious for skipping the social niceties.
