Salome sobbed miserably in Beckett’s arms, her voice trembling with injustice. “The Vance family is being pushed around like this–I don’t even want to live anymore! If Edith is going to make my life hell at every turn, maybe I’m better off dead!”
Beckett was bewildered, but he scooped Salome into his arms and helped her into the car.
“Salome, what on earth happened? Tell me, please–enough of this talk about dying. If Edith really did something to you or your family, I won’t let her get away with it.”
Salome lifted her tearstained face, her eyes pleading as she looked at Beckett. “She actually sent people to kidnap my brother. They ganged up on him–beat him within an inch of his life! She knows my pregnancy has been rocky this whole time, so she targeted my family to upset me, to stress me out. She’d love nothing more than for me to lose this baby. Only then would she be satisfied!”
Beckett frowned, unconvinced. “Why would Edith go after your brother? Even if she’s jealous about the baby, she’d never have the guts to have your brother beaten like that.”
Salome’s voice quivered as she pressed on, looking even more pitiful. “Maybe she doesn’t, but what if she found a man who does?”
A man with no scruples?
Beckett’s brow furrowed deeper. “You mean the guy Edith married? I doubt even he would go that far just for her.”
Seeing Beckett’s skepticism, Salome burst into louder, ragged sobs. “And you really think Edith only has the one man in her life? At first, I didn’t believe it when my brother told me either. But after what happened to him–why would he lie about something like that?”
Beckett’s confusión turned to anger. “You’re saying Edith’s seeing someone else on the side? Who is it?”

Chapter 131
Salome watched Beckett carefully, noting how he was falling right into her trap. Her performance became even more dramatic.
“It’s that Henson fellow–everyone knows his reputation. He’s involved in all kinds of shady dealings, and his private life is a mess. Who knows what Edith offered him to make him go after my brother like that.“–
Henson Sheffield? Beckett definitely knew of the man’s
reputation–scandal after scandal. But he never imagined Edith would get mixed up with someone like Henson, let alone to the point where he’d do her dirty work.
What could Edith possibly offer? What else could it be but herself?
