He went on, “I heard you studied art before. I have a good friend who’s into street art. They’re organizing a community mural project at the Northcrest Riverbend Zoo to raise awareness about protecting the environment and caring for animals. They’re still looking for an artist. Would you be interested?”

Edith agreed almost instantly, without even thinking it through. “Of course I’d love to! It’s just… I haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years. I’m not sure if I’m still any good…”

As she finished speaking, it suddenly occurred to her that she should probably get Justin’s opinion before agreeing. Back when she lived with the Vance family, she never would have been allowed to put herself out there, let alone go painting murals

at a zoo–Beckett would have had a fit.

When she met Justin’s gaze, he surprised her with a small smile. “Why wouldn’t you be good enough? I know you can do it.”

Then Justin shot Connor a meaningful look. “And it’s not every day that Attorney Grant, with his busy schedule, goes out of his way to help my wife find a job.”

Connor just shrugged with a sly grin. “Mr. Hawksley, do you think it’s beneath Edith to paint murals at the zoo? Really, if you have any objections, say the word. I won’t pressure her if you’re not on board.”

Justin narrowed his eyes, a silent warning for Connor to stop stirring things up.

But Connor pretended not to notice. He turned to Edith with an exaggerated sigh. “What a shame, Edith. With your current status, it really isn’t appropriate. Can you imagine if people found out Mrs. Hawksley was doing street art? It’d be a scandal for Mr. Hawksley.”

A furrow formed between Edith’s brows. She had to admit, Connor had a point. No matter how much Justin said he didn’t mind, something like this could affect his

reputation.

She was about to turn down the offer when Justin abruptly glared at Connor and snapped, “What kind of nonsense are you spouting?”

Edith had seen Justin stern before, but she’d never heard him swear like that. Both she and Connor stared at him in surprise.

Turning back to Edith, Justin’s face softened again. “Edith, if you want to do it, then of course you can. What matters most is what you love.”

Justin wanted Edith to do anything that made her happy–though he couldn’t help feeling a little annoyed that, because of this, she’d have to see more of Connor.
