Marrying my secret admirer after my husband's fake death novel Chapter 33

Chapter 33

Chapter 33

The cab driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror, uncertainty in his voice. “Ma’am, are you getting in or not?”

Without hesitation, Edith pulled open the door and slid onto the back

seat. “Yes, let’s go.”

On the other end of the phone, Beckett’s voice erupted, angry and frantic. “Something’s happened to Salome! You should have called Dr. White the moment you found out. Besides, Salome said you pushed her-so it’s on you to fix this! Her situation is critical, Edith, don’t make me say something I’ll regret!”

Say something he’ll regret? Edith let out a soft, cold laugh, her eyes calm. Could anything he say possibly compare to what they’d already done?

She ran a hand through her disheveled hair, gazing out at the city rushing by. This time, her expression was more resolute than ever. “As far as the Vance family is concerned, I stopped being involved the day my husband Beckett’s death was announced. I’m not calling in favors from the Sumner family for your precious Salome. If you’re accusing me of pushing her, then show me proof. I have guests from the Sumner family to attend to and I don’t have time for games. Unless you have evidence, don’t bother me. If you do, then let’s talk about it with facts.”

Beckett felt a jolt of panic. “Guests? What guests?”

A smile played at Edith’s lips, brighter than before. “The guests at my wedding, of course.”

For a moment, Beckett nearly lost it, but as he looked up at the closed doors of the emergency operating room, he forced himself to focus. Right now, Salome’s unborn child was more important. If they lost the baby, all this pain would start over again. He only needed to hang on a few more months and everything could go back to the way it was.

“You’re only marrying that old man for his money, aren’t you? How much do you want? As long as it’s not outrageous, I’ll pay you! Consider it the

price for the Sumner family’s favor.”

Edith rolled her eyes. Who said she was marrying some old man? Justin’s face flashed through her mind-he was nothing like that.

“Sorry, but this favor isn’t for sale. The Sumner family doesn’t do business like that. It’s really that simple.”

She hung up before Beckett could say another word.

The cab driver glanced back at her, concern etched on his face as he took in her rumpled appearance. “Ma’am, are you alright?”

Edith used her phone’s screen as a makeshift mirror and winced-she looked even more battered than she’d thought. It was as if she’d taken a serious beating.

The driver hesitated, then asked, “Do you need me to take you to the police?”

She shook her head. “No, but thank you.”

The last thing she wanted was to get tangled up with the Vance family any further.

As her messy hair reflected back from the screen, she thought of Heather. That woman really hadn’t held back at all. If only she’d put that much energy into looking after her precious grandson.

Inside the hospital, Heather was pale with panic, her usual composure nowhere to be seen. Clutching her son’s hand, she almost shrieked, “Where’s that little tramp Edith? She did this to my grandson and now she’s vanished?”

She was finally starting to panic. “If she’s gone, who’s going to call Dr. White?”

Beckett was sweating bullets. The doctors had just told him Salome’s baby was in trouble. But Dr. White-the miracle worker-wasn’t swayed by money or power, only by personal connections. Without someone to pull strings, there was no way to get him involved.
