Marrying my secret admirer after my husband's fake death novel Chapter 46

Chapter 46

Chapter 46

Bennett was the best catch Salome could ever hope for-there was no way she’d settle for someone who didn’t even measure up to him.

Who could have guessed that everything would fall into place so perfectly?

Now her husband wasn’t just set to inherit the company; he was more dedicated than ever, throwing himself into its affairs. How could she not be pleased?

Heather, busy bossing around the nurses in the hospital room as they sliced up fruit, couldn’t help but fuss over her son. “Let the department managers handle the company for now. You’ve got too much on your plate already. Just focus on taking care of Salome.”

“Mom, there’s a lot going on at work right now. Salome has you and a whole team of doctors and nurses looking after her-she’ll be fine,” Beckett replied.

But as Beckett looked out at the storm raging beyond the window, his mind was somewhere else entirely-on Edith.

For some reason, the thought of staying by Salome’s side in the hospital felt suffocating. He’d much rather lose himself in the chaos at the office. Only when he was busy could he momentarily push thoughts of Edith

away.

Then another flash of lightning split the sky, and his worry flared again. Edith hated thunderstorms. Whenever one rolled in, she’d lock herself in, draw the curtains tight, and tremble like a leaf.

He couldn’t just sit here. He had to find her.

The moment the thought struck, Beckett knew he couldn’t stay in the hospital room a second longer.

Meanwhile, Salome was pouring her heart out to Heather. “I brought a gift for Edith, and not only did she turn her nose up at it, but she actually

shoved me! She knows how unstable my pregnancy is.”

Heather snorted with disdain. “Don’t let it get to you, darling. I’ve already given her a piece of my mind for you. Don’t let her spoil your mood.”

Salome pressed on, “I heard Edith sent my gift straight back. Does she have a problem with what I picked out, or does she just think the Vance family isn’t good enough for her?”

As she spoke, she shot a meaningful look at Beckett.

But Beckett’s mind was elsewhere. He stood up abruptly. “Mom, can you stay with Salome? I just remembered there’s a contract at work I haven’t signed, and my assistant’s been chasing me about it.”

Heather raised an eyebrow, clearly displeased. “What kind of assistant has the nerve to rush you?”

Beckett didn’t bother explaining. He was about to leave when Salome grabbed his wrist. “Aren’t you staying with me tonight?”

Looking at her, so delicate and vulnerable, Beckett hesitated for a moment-but his urge to see Edith was stronger.

He leaned down and kissed Salome on the forehead. “I promise I’ll be back tonight. Be good and let me finish up at work.”

Reluctantly, Salome let go, pecking his lips as she did. “I’ll be waiting.”

Once Beckett had gone, Heather’s eyes narrowed with calculation. She asked, almost casually, “Salome, you haven’t heard any strange rumors lately, have you?”

Salome hadn’t, but she kept her guard up. “What kind of rumors, Mom?”

Heather cleared her throat, a mocking smile on her lips. “Oh, just things like… Beckett didn’t really die, it was Bennett who died, or something ridiculous like that…”
