The line went dead almost instantly.
Edith hadn’t even had time to hand the phone back to Jayne before another call came through–this time, it was Justin.
“This is my number,” he said, his tone steady and calm.
Edith was momentarily puzzled. How did he have her number? She was sure they’d never actually exchanged phone numbers before.
But before she could dwell on it, Justin’s deep voice continued, “Were you calling because of the engagement gifts?”
It was uncanny, how he seemed to know exactly what she was thinking.
On the bright side, at least she didn’t have to stumble over how to bring it
She softly replied, “Yes–the engagement gifts… there are just so many.”
She hadn’t gone through the items one by one, but even a quick glance told her they were incredibly valuable.
Everything in that living room was expensive–just a couple of those things would have been beyond what the Sumner family could ever repay, let alone the whole room filled with gifts,
On the other end, Justin sounded completely unfazed.
“As long as you’re not worried it’s too little,” he said.
Edith felt a pang of embarrassment. That was hardly the problem–the gifts were far too much!/
Before she could find the right words, Justin spoke again, his voice gentle but firm. “The gifts are just a gesture. They’re meant to show the
Hawksley family’s respect for you, and for your family. That’s all they mean–nothing more.”
Edith followed his lead, replying, “The Sumner family wants to show our

respect for the Hawksleys, too, but…”
Justin absentmindedly traced the rim of his teacup, gazing out at the sun breaking through after the heavy rain. He realized he’d talked himself into.
a corner.
He’d intended to say the engagement gifts didn’t require an equally generous dowry, but somehow it came out sounding like if the Sumner family didn’t match the gesture, it would mean they didn’t respect the Hawksleys.
He frowned, thinking carefully, before finally finding the right words.
“The Sumner family’s respect for the Hawksleys is already clear–you’re entrusting your beloved daughter to us. We all see that. So there’s no need to worry about matching gifts or dowries.”
Edith finally felt a little more at ease.
Still… a small worry lingered at the back of her mind.
But once again, Justin seemed to read her thoughts as if he could see right through her.
“My view is the same as my parents‘,” he added.
That reassurance finally put Edith’s mind at rest.
“All right, Mr. Hawksley. I understand.”
She was about to hang up when Justin added, “Edith, my WhatsApp is the same as my phone number. If it’s convenient, add me.”
About three minutes after the call ended, Justin received the friend
request.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t tried to add her before–Edith’s privacy settings were just too strict. No matter whether he tried her phone number or her WhatsApp ID, he simply couldn’t get through.
He accepted her request instantly. When he tapped her profile picture, he saw a radiant bouquet of white gardenias, like the first bloom of summer.
