“You’re still young. In time, you may meet someone even better, someone more worthy of entrusting with your whole life,” Everett said.
“That won’t happen. To me, he is already the best. Uncle Everett, he is the man I would stake my life to protect. I love him with everything inside me.”
Everett glared at his niece, his eyes as hard as hammered iron. After a long, heavy beat, he growled, frustration coating every syllable. “Seems I can’t talk sense into you.”
“Exactly,” she said.
Everett felt his heart seize again, as though someone had yanked the muscle tight.
To the outside world, he was the sharp–edged patriarch of the Fane family, swift and uncompromising. Yet in front of this niece, he found himself disarmed, helpless in ways he could scarcely admit.
Everett flicked his hand, dismissing her. “All right, go visit your grandmother; she’s missing you terribly. I kept last night’s mess from her–do not let it slip.”
Quinn stood, then hesitated, her gaze sliding toward Julius, still seated in the chair.
“What, do you imagine I’ll swallow him whole?” Everett barked.
“Not at all.” Quinn managed a small smile. “Julius, stay and share some coffee with Uncle Everett. I’ll go see Grandma.”
Everett said after Quinn left, “Quinn may think you’re the only man for her now, but she’s still young. Her world has been simple. She hasn’t met many admirable men. Give her time and options, and she’ll realize you are not the best choice.
“So, Mr. Fane, are you planning to parade suitable bachelors in front of her?” Julius finished the rest of his coffee.
“Naturally,” Everett said.
Quinn’s certainty might be steel, but Everett was far from surrendering.
Julius sipped the coffee, dark lashes lifting just enough to fix Everett with a cool, measuring look.
In that instant, a tremor of instinctive fear detonated inside Everett; those eyes made him feel

“Sadly,” Julius‘ voice cut the silence, calm as falling snow, “none of those men will ever manage to stand in front of Quinn.”
Everett’s brow knotted. “Is that a threat?”
“Not a threat–just the simple truth.” He took another unhurried sip. “Quinn has chosen me. I will not yield her to anyone. From this moment forward, she belongs to me alone.”
“You’re arrogant. Do you really think the Whitethorn name lets you do anything you want?” Everett sneered.
“It isn’t the Whitethorn name. It’s the fact that no one on earth can love her more fiercely than I do.”
Everett kept glaring at Julius, yet found no quick rebuttal.
On that single point–Julius‘ willingness to die for Quinn–Everett could not disagree.
Yet unease lingered.
“Staying by your side places her in constant danger.” Everett voiced his biggest worry.
“She is no weakling, and I will protect her with everything I have. If harm ever reaches her, I’ll go with her–life or death, together.”
Everett froze. The declaration was unmistakable: should Quinn fall, Julius would go to the grave beside her.
How many men, truthfully, would ever have the nerve to let such bold words slip from their lips?
Everett pressed his mouth into a hard line. The muscles at the bridge of his brows twisted so tightly they seemed ready to knot.
“So–tell me when are the two of you flying back to Azania?”
–
“Probably in about a week,” Julius Whitethorn answered after a measured breath. “We still need to wrap things up here, and Quinn wants a little more time with you guys.”
“Then for this entire week,” Everett said, voice leaving no room for debate, “you and Quinn are moving into the old wing at Fane Manor. I want her to spend as much time as possible with her grandmother.”
